If they are making cut backs, why did they try and break our transfer record in the summer window?? Is it not not likely, that are taking their time to appoint the right people?? The coach we just appointed, was who Taylor wanted and want a cheap option. He was looking to go into management himself and already turned down being Johnson's number two at Fleetwood. Well let’s see if £800k or even £100k is spent this window?! I would have thought they would more likely spend fees during the summer, as prices will go up this time of year. Never know though. Who said we are cutting costs??

Who said we are cutting costs?? I’m saying they are and the owner just said we are not spending this window, strange considering we want to get promotion to the Premiership?! Someone will buy JCH to help get promotion, he said little bits of business, we could bring in 4/5 loans where we pay the wages like Woods, no fee involved.

Absolutely we need a scouting network. What seems concerning though, is each manager wants his own people to head/lead it and that only serves to bring upheaval when the next poor sod takes the manager's job. The new owners said they wanted "club people" in the background. How's that going?I'd have thought they would have continued to get Holloway in if they were still going down this route Interesting. My interpretation was that they want people to be employed by the club and to be permanent, regardless of manager. Who knows eh?

Exactly.. and there's arguably no better club figure than Holloway to do that, so I don't know how the Barton sacking should change his alleged appointment. As it is, he has dissed the Taylor appointment anyway so he has saved himself the bother.

It is rare for me to highlight players in lower non-league above their teenage years, but occasionally their are exceptions to the rule like Shermandin Artmeladze. Even rarer then to find another few players worth a closer look, namely 25-year-old Adama Sidibeh at Warrington Rylands,

Kombe Kawimbe at Hemel Hempstead looks like he has some potential. Part of their u18 setup but made full debut for them vs Chippenham at the weekend and impressed. Combative CM/CDM, be interested to see if he continues to get game time for their first team in the second half of the season now.

Hemel have several promising youngsters from the current crop of u18s. They remarkably reached the FA Youth Cup 3rd round for the first time in their history this season, smashing Exeter City 5-2 on the way and then in 3rd round drawing 2-2 after extra time and only losing on pens to Sheffield Wednesday. The Goalkeeper James Taylor was recently called up to the England U18 Schoolboys squad and has made first team debut and the prolific George Still has a nice left foot and also recently made first team debut, along with the two Bradley's, Smith and Roberts, who all caught the eye in FA Youth Cup run.

What happened to Richard Kone? You seemed excited about him and from memory he was a striker? 😢

Hopefully the club will one day be in a position to take advantage of the recent transfer rule changes and look to source players from overseas. A big wide world out there of players waiting to be discovered. Jordi Escobar, 21-year-old, 6ft 2in, Centre Forward, SD Logroñés. A strong and powerful player with decent aerial ability, two decent feet and someone who looks suited to the English game with his physical and technical attributes. A product of the Barcelona and Valencia youth systems, he was highly-rated and prolific as a youngster, scoring 27 goals In his first season with Valencia before backing it up with a further 19 goals in the following campaign. Appeared for Spain at U16, U17 (debut as a 15-year-old) and U18 level. Made a £2mil+ move to Almeria a few years ago, but is now playing his football at 3rd tier club Logroñés (22/23 average attendance 1,189). Contract expires June 30th 2024. Jaume Jardí, 21-year-old, 5ft 9in, Winger, Gimnàstic. Highly-rated as a youngster, the left footed winger was on the books of BOTH Barcelona and Real Madrid as a youngster and represented Spain at U16, U17 and U18 level. He trained with the first team and was captain of Barcelona U19 side where during one season he scored 21 goals in the youth league and followed that up the following season with 15 goals and 5 assists. Currently at Spanish 3rd tier club Gimnàstic (average attendance during 22/23 season 3,118). Contract expires June 30th 2026. 22-year-old forward Samuel 'Samu' Pedro would be another worth scouting if we ever decide to enter the overseas market.

23-year-old Central Midfielder Ryan Stirk at Walsall is a player I like who has impressed over the past couple of years. He had a promising loan spell with Mansfield and then impressed last season at Bromley with two consecutive club Player of the Month awards. This season he has 2 goals, 5 assists, 2 key passes per game, averages 2.7 tackles won per game, and 6 balls recovered per game. Capped by Wales from u16-u21 level.

Some decent free agents that would be worth considering
GK Per Kristian Bråtveit, ST Nigel Robertha, LCB Kevin Bukusu, LCB William Bianda, ST Lassana N'Diaye, CDM Sambou Sissoko, LB/LWB Amadou Ndiaye, CAM Kays Ruiz-Atil, CB Ari Leifsson, CB Kipras Kazukolovas, CDM Alex Thór Hauksson
The ones of most interest probably 22-year-old left footed CB and former Germany youth international Kevin Bukusu
22-year-old left back/wing back and Senegal youth and full international Amadou Ndiaye.
24-year-old defensive midfielder and Iceland youth and full international Alex Thór Hauksson
24-year-old defensive midfielder and former France U21 international Sambou Sissoko 25-year-old forward and former Netherlands youth international Nigel Robertha

Lincoln have recalled striker Freddie Draper from a loan at Walsall. If he doesn't get much game time he would be worth consideration for a future bid. Promising 6ft 2in centre forward.

Another free agent midfielder, Adewale Oladoye, became available at the start of January and another to add to list of players worth a trial if they were willing.

Several times in this thread you mentioned Richard Kone and as can be seen from the recent update post above a club at our level has taken the plunge with him and he’s begun promisingly so I’d mark that down as a successful scout. I think there have been other examples where a player has attained or surpassed the standard you suggested they’d reach. I know we’re all hoping you’ll unearth the next Nigel Martyn or Gary Penrice but we also know how rare they are and for every one of them there are a hundred Shaq Hunters!
Now this thread has achieved a decent age and sample size I wonder whether it is representative of a typical club scouts results? How many of the names on here reached or exceeded a level equivalent to L1? How many may not have attained that level but have achieved raising themselves to a higher standard of football than that they were playing when first talent spotted? How many stagnated or slipped back? And how many gave up entirely? I know several were suggested for trials or development squad possibilities rather than recommendations for the first team squad so even those plying their trade at a higher level now would be considered development successes. If the hit rate stats prove comparable to those of a footy scout in a paid position maybe you could wave those numbers in the current regimes direction and you might have their ear in future.

If the hit rate stats prove comparable to those of a footy scout in a paid position maybe you could wave those numbers in the current regimes direction and you might have their ear in future. I've had people's ear at the club in the past, for example I first watched Ryan Jones in person make what I believe was his first team debut in a pre-season friendly for Weston and then saw the majority of his games for them. I was in constant contact with one of our scouts at the time (Jamie Hedges - now doing a great job as Head of Recruitment at Aldershot) about the lad and he ended up watching Jones extensively. I was in contact with Jamie during the midweek cup game the same day we agreed to sign him ahead of Peterborough, who also agreed a fee that day after Barry Fry had travelled to watch him that night. The thing is, until we re-establish a development squad again, a lot of the non-league players mentioned on here are largely irrelevant, unless we plan to sign them and immediately loan them out. We need to bridge that pathway back from U18s to the first-team again with an U23s/Development Squad IMHO. But then people need to also understand the success rate getting players through will he very low, you'll be doing well if you get one a season, and I can name as many that didn't make it at a club like Peterborough as the ones that did, but when you get it right the rewards can be vast as shown by them. Brentford are another club with a vastly successful recruitment policy and they are constantly trialling/signing players from non-league looking for a gem to polish, despite monitoring a staggering 85,000 players across the globe. Fin Stevens is a good example. He was mentioned in this thread during his time at Worthing as one to watch. Brentford later snapped him up for their B team, he eventually made his first-team debut for them, has gone out on a couple of loans for experience and is now the Wales U21 captain.

I thought David Kamara had secured a move to a higher level already, but now I'm seeing his name on the scoresheet at Welling Utd. A youngster who is prolific at youth level worth scouting.
