Last 2 or 3 years our Youth Team has been excellent. This year it seems they've lost almost every game. Tonight they got knocked out of the FA Youth Cup by Gloucester.
Anyone watch the U'18's? What wrong with this year's crop?

What wrong with this year's crop? Dunno but if we have no scouting system at all then it's hardly surprising. I've got a mate who I play 5 a side with now and again, his 15 year old son is class, when he's played for us he's always our stand out player and our standard is decent. He had a trial for Rovers scored both goals in a 2-0 win and they never got back to him. Now he's at city. It is worrying when you hear these story's.

It's fairly embarrassing that our full time Academy was beaten by a bunch of school/college kids from Gloucester, who probably only train one or two evenings a week.

Please don't knock our young uns . If we start getting on their backs they won't progress. At that age it's about performance and growth and they will need to build confidence. I don't think any of you mean to do that but just remember they are our future and we hope a few go on to flourish and step up to the first team. The likes of Harrison , Lockyer and Clarke all lost matcheds during their development these things happen.
Our youth system is probably the only thing in the last few years we can be proud of and Tom Curtis's work has been an asset to our our club.

We maybe lost an opportunity last season to show that there could be real progression from the youth team to tthe first team. As you said Jon we've had a really promising crop of youngsters recently. But although Lockyer has made it we released Keary, Southway, Cooper, Kamara etc; and now Lucas, Greenslade and others are out on loan. For various reasons Macey, Mehew, Santos, the other 'keeper whose name I forget(!) have all moved out. If we'd had a clear policy of blooding that group of youngsters in the first team then playing for our youth team would be an attractive proposition. (If Southway was still with us perhaps we'd be using Lockyer in his best position!)

I've heard a few people say that this year's under 18s are the worst we've had for years!

Sounds like we need to get some more experience in the side

With no scouting system, would it be feasible to link up with say a Championship side and give loans/trials to players who don't quite make the grade there.Chap I know at Wolves gets concerned when various youngsters are taken aside to be told'Sorry not quite up to it'.Without any real network just wondering if this would be a possibility.

Sadly we have seen very promising youngsters leave - Beauchamp and Mehew would have been adding extra quality into our U18s team - I can only think this is down to relegation and four seasons of failure at first team level . How else can you explain Macey, Santos and the two above all deciding to leave !? Jon, I know you want to put a positive spin on things but losing to Gloucester is embarrassing ! Looking at the U18s results this season - they are well down on the previous 3 seasons. There are a few potential gems there but the overall quality must be lower. I also feel again the club needs to address the issue of a footballing philosophy running right through the club so the better U18s will actually step up to the first team and PLAY in it. For christ sake we are in the conference now - and if we can't get boys like Lucas and Thomas playing for us at this level then our youth factory isn't worth bothering with !! Harsh but true I think.

Like others have said we have lost players to other teams so we must be producing players still. Also we have loaned out some of our younger players this season, who would make a difference at this level.

if our full time U18's can't beat the likes of p/t Gloucester you really do wonder what the point is in investigating £100K's a season in our youth set up when we must have the pick, after City, of the best young players within 20 miles of Bristol.
It's worrying that apart from Harrison, who still remains hit & miss, the only other young player to make the grade, Lockyer, didn't join us until he was 16.

Until City and ROvers get their first teams up the leagues I can't see anything changing. Rovers also need to have better match pitches for their academy teams - we can't compete with the others otherwise.

Support the set up. Ok this season may not be the best but you don't give up on something good just because it has a difficult patch.
