Well, the Football Authorities are making a right pigs ear of Video Replay (VAR) technology in football. Anyone who witnessed the calamity of the Confederations Cup will not be surprised. In German football (Bundesliga) the VAR is used in all games, and every week there is confusion. This week, Dortmund beat Cologne 5-0, but it was the second goal that has caused the uproar. The keeper dropped the ball, and a Dortmund player stroked it into the empty net, but the ref had blown for a foul on the keeper. The linesman watched the replay, and informed the ref that the keeper had in fact collided with his own defender, and the goal should stand, so the ref awarded the goal. The only problem is that the ref had in fact blown before the goal crossed the line, so technically, the ball was dead and a goal cannot be awarded ! Cologne are demanding that the game be replayed !
The main problem with VAR is that the ref's are now not in control of the game. If the fourth ref (or tv ref if you like) sees that the ref has made an incorrect decision, he informs the ref straight away, and the decision is then changed. The man on the pitch is controlled by the man watching the tv pictures. In truth, it's totally unfair on the poor ref's, who in fairness, have a difficult job anyway.
