I agree that the idea of 'playing to our strengths' is a problem. I've been to numerous games where we've played long balls over the top towards Tom Nichols of all people - who is not going to be challenging for it and hence we lose possession.
Ellis does well but he's not as good in the air as Taylor used to be despite not being that tall. Gaffney should be starting games imo if we're choosing this long ball and set-piece style of scoring goals (which seems to be the way we are playing atm).
On the issue of Nichols, I followed his progression from his time at Exeter City and the lad definitely has potential under Marcus Stewart's coaching. Might be more of a long-term plan for him? But in agreement with most here, I think a big strong target man should be our main target in Jan.

Please don’t do that. I think my post summed up what I wanted to say more than your “fix” Thanks. Oh, my mistake. I forgot all humour had been abandoned on here. Oh well. Enjoy yourselves.

Lol I’m as much up for a laugh as anyone on here especially during these times of doom and gloom and rumours I’d just rather my posts weren’t hijacked by mods.

Gaffney should be starting games imo if we're choosing this long ball and set-piece style of scoring goals (which seems to be the way we are playing) And this is exactly why Gaffney doesn't get game time, because he is hopeless in the air. I agree about Ellis, and for both reasons, it's why we need a good strong big man up front who CAN head a ball. Cheque book anyone?

Drag lambo out of retirement! Can’t be that bad after a few months! Even if we used him as a head on a pole it would do the job!

Harrison has been out only consistent player this season imo. Gafney averages better than a goal every 180 minutes which is all you could ask from a striker so he’s been consistent . The only inconsistency with Rory is he doesn’t get a chance by being given a run in the team. Performance wise Ellis has been miles infront of anyone this season, Lockyer has been disappointing as I thought he'd matured into a solid player for us.

Ellis, Telford, gaffney are ok! Maybe league 2 normally and league 1 at their best! Nichols is conf/league 2 on current showing and has potential to be league 1! So no not good enough!

OP mentions are the forwards we have good enough to 'take the club forward'?
No.
Definitely not. As we've seen.

Think it’s the lack of chances created, Nichols looked good for Exeter, Ellis has been our best player this season, and Gaffney can finish but spends too much time on the wing crossing the ball which he should be on the end of. DC knows he messed up the recruitment and I think he will be quicker off the mark and more ruthless come January.

DC knows he messed up the recruitment and I think he will be quicker off the mark and more ruthless come January. We create more chances than any club in the division somebody put on here a few days ago. We’ve also scored a lot of goals this season. I think our problem has been the defensive side of things. If D.C. brings in strikers in January and doesn’t address the defensive side of things then we’re in big trouble. If I was him I’d go all out for Lumley and have Slocombe as number 2 and loan out smith also. My biggest worry is that in my opinion our squad is good enough for this division but we are really struggling due to the lack of leaders and the January window mainly has young loan players available. Perhaps we can bring in an experienced defensive midfielder from a championship club who’s out of favour, that’s the kind of thing we need to be looking at. Edit: I’ve just looked and we’ve had the 6th most shots on target this season in league 1 and we’ve scored more goals than Shrewsbury and the team in third so I don’t think there’s a problem to the attacking aspect of our game , other than perhaps we’re too attacking and need to keep things tighter. I wouldn’t mind seeing Nichols go out on loan and us get someone else in return but I’d leave Ellis and Rory well alone they’ve both done great.

Admittedly I haven't been to the last couple of games but I am amazed people are talking about our strikers. I think Ellis and Gaffney have surpassed my expectations this season if anything and it is clear as day that they are the least of our problems. Our main problems this season have been defensively and although it is not always true, I do believe in the saying "build from the back".
Nichols has been a major disappointment admittedly but how can we say we need a new striker when we have Telford sitting on the bench not getting a look in.

We have one (very) good winger and with Telford barely getting a look in and Nichols struggling thus far, two decent strikers. IMO.

There looks to be a very good player in there but he never gets a chance, I would give him a go in front of Nichols for the next couple of games. What’s the worst that could happen?

If you were Hani, and you saw DC wasn't even playing a guy you spent really good money on, how likely would you be to loosen the purse strings in Jan?

Time for the Board to man up and prove their worth...get in either Doidge or Akinde or that sort of player. Steve Why would we go for Akinde again? Also why is he still at Barnet if he is that good? Doidge would take some shifting from florist green; but might see it as a challenge if nobody else is after him (unlikely imo). Keep up the reports

Ellis' goals to minutes ratio has been pretty good in the past having come off the bench and scored and not starting many games. When he started it wasn't the same.
personally I don't think our strikers are that bad. Nichols has been unfortunate most of the time and put in good performances.
Our strikers though are under pressure to score every chance because we are pretty sh** at keeping the ball out of our own net.
A better defence might ease the pressure on the strike force and vice versa etc, etc

My guess would be that DC is planning on sending Telford back in January to free up some room for incomings, and knows it will be difficult to do that (and anger the fans) if Telford has a run in the team and plays really well between now and the transfer window. But that is just a guess and could be total nonsense.
