Aldershot Town chairman Shahid Azeem hasn’t ruled out further signings at the EBB Stadium but admits supporters ‘shouldn’t get carried away’.
The Shots sold forward Bernard Mensah to League One side Bristol Rovers earlier this month, and while it means extra money in the bank for the National League club, the north Hampshire side are unlikely to be competing with Manchester United for Alexis Sanchez any time soon.
And following Mensah’s exit, Azeem, believes, just like with Idris Kanu and Kundai Benyu, the most important thing was that the 23-year-old has gone to a good club.
“Bernard is a larger than life character and he was great for us on the pitch and off the pitch,” Azeem said. “I don’t go in the changing room, but I’m sure he was the same in the changing room.
“We never wanted to lose him but the reality was that he had three months of his contract left and, don’t forget there were other clubs involved in it, but he had a League One interested and we never want to stand in the way whether it be Idris or even when we had Benny here.
“What Gary and James are doing is that when young players come here, it’s a stepping stone for them to play at a higher level. So we didn’t want to stand in Bernard’s way.

“That sadly comes with the territory in that when you are successful then everyone wants you. So it shows we are doing something right.
“We are never happy with the fee for anyone, it doesn’t matter if it is £100,000 or £500,000, you always want more but the most important thing was that Bernard has gone to a good club.”

And while the Shots chairman wants to help manager Gary Waddock and assistant James Rowe with any players they would like to add to the squad, he warns that balancing the books comes ahead of any new signings.
“We are still working with Gary and still trying to identify players and that’s money that we didn’t have, that we didn’t budget for, but let’s not get carried away,” he said.
