France may well have won anyway....
But that penalty decision, in my opinion was a shocker. He was so close to the ball and it was clearly not a deliberate act. At best it was an involuntary reaction.
The wording and the application of the handball rule is dreadful. My reading is that there has to be intent. That is the first criteria. Everything is null and void afterwards, if it is not a deliberate act yet the following sentences of the rule muddy the waters in talking of ‘ball to hand’ or ‘hand to ball’, diverting the path etc. It drives me mad. If it’s not clear and blatant and deliberate handball then it shouldn’t be given.
VAR could work brilliantly if the rules are easier to apply in the first place. I also don’t like how the organisers have dodged the issue of diving in this World Cup. Griezemann’s dive today was clear and blatant. Defender nowhere near making contact with him. Looking at the footage I’ve never seen a more obvious dive. In my opinion those sort of instances should be picked up by VAR and even if it’s 5 mins later, it should result in a straight red card. It’s the only way we can start to eradicate this clear blight on our game.

I would like to see a system where the ref has the ability to tell the coach/manager of the offending player that he has to be substituted straight away. |

I actually meant unpin it but it's ok I think it was left until after the open day so that it could be confirmed that the 2 winners had been paid. I know that Parrot and I met Sean but when I left he hadn't met up with @tillysthighs. The 3 shirt winners collected their prizes on the day too. |
