Just interested in opinions on what a top six teams must haves and what we need to change
Mine is a Aerial threat on set pieces as in from the back as locks isn’t one consistently, Craig isn’t one and can only see Broadbent becoming one but can’t see dc dropping locks or Craig which is frustrating, Hartley was a good one and gave us that bonus but unfortunately not a consistent defender
Another quality proven striker as Ellis has done well last season but I still can’t see he’s going to fire us to top six or promotion
Right winger with pace and great delivery with a few goals would get us there

I’ve heard people say we must have a 20 goal a season striker. I don’t think that’s true. A look at previous top scorer charts shows that although it helps, it’s very rare to have someone score so many. Usually only one or two teams a season have them and they are by no means guaranteed promotion with them. What is important is goals coming from around the team. Having 3 players scoring 12-15 normally does it. So we need Ellis, Sercombe and one more to step up to the plate. That person may well be a new striker. There’s an outside chance it could be Nichols or Bennett. But we’re not as far away as some think, in my opinion.

I would say a brand new state of the art stadium and a Dam massive cheque book. Sadly 2 things we don’t have.

We still need another striker, some decent full backs and a winger in my opinion.
Dont know much about the new signings so far , but in the Center of midfield, we need a big solid player who can just do the simple thing of picking up the ball and making easy passes keeping possession and moving the side forward. The better sides have good transition from defending to attack, we have to either hoof the ball to get out or wait for a breakdown of play.

A few times last season we shown how good we can be when we get the ball down and play (Wigan at home springs to mind). The problem is that we were not consistent enough and hopefully with the new pitch we can see an improvement in that area at home.

To be a top team we need a keeper who can keep, defenders who can defend, midfielders who can create, control the pace of the game and strikers who can score and give opposing defenders a hard time. On a more practical, current level we need to get two strikers and a left back minimum. Not sure we’ll see a winger with what we’ve got but if the right one came along better than what we have then I’d take it. UTG!

This is what I'd like in an ideal world to get us near the top 6.
A new left back (Reece James or Luke Leahy preferably).
A big, dominant centre back, although I don't expect we will sign one. (6ft 4in Ben Heneghan, 6ft 3in Dorian Dervite, 6ft 4in Cian Bolger, or 6ft 5in Luka Bogdan).
A Winger that can play either side, preferably two, but one would be ok. (Harry Forrester, Gavin Whyte, Adam Hammell David Wheeler, Matty Kennedy, Alex Rodman, Fabio Viteritti, Manuel Farrona Pulido, Marcus Mendler, Luigi Falcone, Jari Vandeputte, Luigi Canotto).
Two strikers. (Manuel Fischnaller, Alessandro Capello, Marc Cardona, Marcel Platzek, Sam Hendriks, Macauley Chrisantus, Ander Vitoria, Dani Aquino, Streli Mamba).
A minimum of 4 new signings as I don't think we will sign the CB.

To be honest, a load of new names many from abroad that I've never seen play wouldn't be essentials towards getting top six place in my book. Neither is a top notch stadium, state of the art training facilities, or better pies!! There's no doubt that finding round pegs for round holes, a playing style that all players in the squad and all coaches (and fans) believe in and continue to believe in long term, and a squad that sustains quality when presented by injury and selection crises will get you there. I.e a ship where every component no matter how small is pulling in the same direction. So a content dressing room, board room and fan base is the key. If you'd have told me at the start of the 1990 promotion campaign that we were going to rip out the two highest quality players (Martyn & Penrice) and still top the lot I would not have believed you. However, the team roles were already decided and a competent keeper (Parkin) replacing an outstanding one, plus an acquisition that had little experience as a striker (Saunders) but could perform the role vacated by Penrice without questioning the manner of that role meant that not only was top six possible but top spot was achievable.
Last season Shrewsbury showed us much the same characteristics- a way of playing that they believed in, total trust in what the manager had implemented and a board, management, playing squad and fan base that were in tune with each other. So get those components right and the conditions should be in place for a good season. It is a natural weakness to look for excuses as to why you won't (or didn't) achieve what you hoped....we'd have finished top six if we had been able to keep Taylor, we'd have finished top six if Bodin was not injured at Northampton etc, etc. We have to be tough enough and prepared enough to be able to say the plan will work whether it is Browner or Kelly at left back, Bodin or Baghdadi on the wing, Taylor or Nichols linking the midfield to the striker etc. Yes we need the ammo to fire the gun and we have to trust TW and DC to obtain that ammo by August 9th...but it is the gun we've got to believe in ...that's what has got to work more often than not to fire us to top six!
