"The NHS must offer transgender patients awaiting transitioning treatment access to fertility services or it risks breaking the law, the health service has been warned by the country’s equality watchdog. The Equality and Human Rights Commission (EHRC) is threatening legal action if “outdated” NHS policies, which it says discriminate against the transgender community, are not changed urgently. “Our laws and our values protect those who seek treatment for gender dysphoria,” Hilsenrath said. “This means that, where appropriate, treatment should be made available in order to ensure that access to health services is free of discrimination. A choice between treatment for gender dysphoria and the chance to start a family is not a real choice. The removal and storage of eggs and sperm – a process known as gamete extraction – gives transgender people the option of having their own biological children after transitioning treatment." So, the taxpayer has to pay for someone to have their knackers chopped off, and at the same time we have to supply them with fertility treatment? Is it any wonder the NHS is struggling for money? Complete and utter madness. The Guardian

Oh it gets better, NHS now to pay for rehabilitation for children addicted to video games.
Never mind the cancer sufferers, the huge shortage of nurses, Doctors, beds, lets treat this lot who should have had their xboxes taken away from them by the Parents in the first place.
What the hell are we doing?

Well, they refused to treat my sex addiction. Oh no, don't tell me that you're getting splinters from humping the leg of the kitchen table? That could cause an infection y'know?

Well, they refused to treat my sex addiction. To be fair, you probably just needed a vet.

Seriously though we do need to look at what the NHS should cover. Obviously when Nye Bevan brought the NHS into being he could not have envisaged what technology would bring. Equally, when Equality Laws are drafted, unintended consequences should be considered. As a starter for ten these are some the things that should be paid for privately. Fertility Treatment Abortion where failure to take precaution is obvious Correction of failed privately delivered cosmetic surgery A&E service due to alcohol, drugs or fighting.

The way it works here in Germany is that basically the hospital's treat you if you are 'broken' (if you get my drift). Anything else, then you have to go to a Specialist Doctor outside of the hospital. NHS. Fertility treatment - Usually the first attempt is free, but then it's 5,000 quid a go. You also missed out Gastric Bands.

Not so sure because if effective the saving on long term costs due to health issues associated with obesity may make it a false economy

A friend of mine has spent 20k with the NHS on this. Gastric Bands - Nope. Just tell people to eat less and move more.

We cannot, should not, tell people how to live. But they should face up to the consequences of their choice

No, you cannot tell people how to live, but they cannot expect the taxpayer to cough up for the results of their lifestyle. We seem to agree on this

Looks to me like the OP is very bitter that she can't get the op she wants in Germany. Trololol Nice try Germany is an Insurance-Based Health system. If you want treatment like this, you first have to ask your Health Insurance Company if they will pay for it. I can tell you right now, they will not. You then have to pay for it yourself if you want the work done. The health system here is designed to fix you if you are broken. Having yer knackers chopped off and calling yourself Melanie is considered to be a cosmetic treatment and therefore not covered under the terms of your health policy.

Harshly worded but in principle I have doubts over funding sex changes for those who are basically gay. Their choice and of course none of my business, or anyone's. But pay for it?

Transvestism, transgender and transexual is nothing like being basically gay. There is a pretty good case to argue that's it's not a choice either though for some it is. I agree that the NHS needs to look at what things we currently offer free of charge
