Jack Marriott was only 21/22 during that season in L2 and is clearly still improving; Payne is 27 on Friday.
Also, as I keep saying, it's not all about goals. Harrison was strong, powerful and good in the air. He could hold the ball up or travel 50 yards in possession like at Doncaster. He had fantastic work rate, tracked back and headed more set pieces out of our box than both our centre backs. From what I've read on the Shrews forum Payne tocks none of those boxes.
Half of our fans thought Harrison was lazy.

I can't believe I'm saying this... but for once in my life I'm in the know, I know something you all don't! Man this feels good, knowall and gasincider never said it felt this good.
Friend of mine from Uni's best mate got to know him very well from his time at barnsley and still keep in touch today, obviously I've asked what's the craic and although Shrewsbury have accepted a bid because we've triggered a clause.... the man himself is not keen because it means moving his young family again, having already moved them around from Dover > barnsley > Shrewsbury, now potentially Bristol. Payne wants to stay in the north as he's made friends and settled in South Yorkshire. Be very surprised if he joins knowing that.
Do I win some kind of prize for knowing this? Or do I get called a sh**head from now on 😅

And how many times did his first touch give away possession. I'm not knocking EH but similarly if anyone thinks we can replace him with a perfect striker at league 1 level then you have a surprise coming.......whatever his name and record

Ah yes. Penalties don't count. Your words, not mine. Penalties aren’t easy to score and you want a player who will score every one we’re given. How many goals would lambert have for us or shearer have in pen minus pens

No one will be thinking about Ellis come Saturday when Super Stefan Payne scores a 90th minute winner against Accy send them all home in tears, thatchers end belting out up the football league we go. i stopped thinking about Ellis a few years ago, anyone can run around like a blue arsed fly for 90 mins Mid table l1 player at best,we needed 2 decent strikers before he left

DC would probably have spoken to his mate Hurst concerning Payne.

So he travelled 50 yards in possession once? Add it to the list of things he's good at. Payne didn't need to head set pieces out of the Shrews box as they had a fantastic defence. The fact is us and Shrews are two very different teams and he'll fit in differently here than he did at Shrews. Actually he did it a number of times. I remember a goal he scored at Rotherham not long after his debut I think. He didn't always score but he brought so much to the team. In my opinion Payne is not what we're looking for and won't even fit in here as well as he did at Shrewsbury. As you pointed out they don't need him to head away set pieces, we do. We certainly need him to hold up the ball and bring others into play which according to Shrews he can't do.
I hope this comes back to bite me but Payne could be a worse signing than Nichols. At least Nichols is a half decent player even though he clearly can't finish. Shrews fans are laughing at us for signing someone who they consider 's**te'.
"A funny one this, but despite his goals I’ve always thought Payne was generally quite s**te. He never looked like a thorn in anyone’s side and never did you feel great expectation when bringing him off the bench. He always seems to be struggling for form."
I actually hope this one falls through.
Of course he'll get my full support on match days if he does sign and I'll be more than happy to eat some humble pie if he proves me wrong.
No I remember that one too but I don't think it was something he was fantastically good at, especially if the two times we can remember him doing it are a few months back and not long after he made his debut like 7 years ago? Maybe that's a role for Upson and Rodman to do now as they play further behind him, and he can come in and just score goals? He doesn't have to be a like for like replacement for Ellis. Edit: ^ the defending, not the 50 yard runs...

He was also very good at donating balls to the kids of Alton Road, but overall he became he a good player last year. Think is: he’s gone. Payne is useful- works this.

But the sentiment is still that his family are settled and moving to Bristol is obviously going to unsettle that.

Shrews fans talking about £400,000!
That figure comes from the same Gashead who said Ellis transfer fee was £1.6m.

Obviously I can't divulge my sources, but I have heard that something will happen that will surprise you all, on this matter. I can't say what it is, but it's not good. Just wait and see if I'm not right."

That’s just paranoia. People just disagree with your views. I don't really take a lot of notice about what people say about me the forum is about opinions we can't all be right but time will be the judge of that every manger becomes the villain eventually. I'd hate for you to take that point in time and feel vindicated or something like you were right all along. You're absolutely not. We all know you're not and there's a part of me that thinks you know you're not either because you're just on the wind up.

You can hope we've spoken to his agent and he's said he's interested in a move south, although does he really want to stay at Shrewsbury and face a real battle to stay up or move to Rovers and get a decent pay rise? The worry is though as Shrewsbury seem to have gone public are we just being used so they can get more money like Walsall have just managed.
