Smith 3 no-one had much confidence at the back not helped by his jitters. Have a feeling that if a midlands club had come in for him before Lincoln enquired about Slocombe we would have been watching Sam's last but one game before a spell on the bench rather than smudger's. Different first choice keeper next Saturday.
Leadbitter 4 didn't find a decent cross going forward and left lots of room behind him defensively. Not an effective game for him.
Clarke J 6 slightly more solid at Centre Half than his partner but since he's been one of the better fullbacks for creating chances and assists so far this season it is a pity we had to sacrifice that by playing him centrally.
Broadbent 5 had twenty minutes in each half where he had Tom Lockyer's passing boots on and couldn't find a man in a white and blue patchy shirt. The rest of the time he was rugged, hard working and unspectacular
Craig 4 would rather he and JC had switched roles..but I guess DC had his reasons for making them play it that way round. TC has said he doesn't mind where he plays as long as he's in the team. For me it's I don't mind whether or not he plays but if he does start it has to be at centre half! Gave their wide men a free ride.
Sercombe 6 looked well up for this game, shame injury cut his match down to just a cameo appearance
Upson 2 Dead balls NO, accurate passing NO, effective tackling NO, lung bursting runs NO, calmness on the ball NO, Can't fault his effort and enthusiasm but that's just not enough.
Clarke O 5.5 clearly a frustrated captain on the day having to do two jobs because of the lack of effectiveness from his teammates, his shot in the second half was a rare highlight of a dire game.
Bennett 4 occasional glimpses of what he could do were the equivalent of putting lipstick on a pig .... it's still a pig! One of his brushed off the ball, kept quiet too easily appearances.
Nichols 5 excellent first time shot from sercombe's assist crashed against the woodwork. Plenty of effort but well marshalled and gradually faded out the game.
Payne 4 never a goal threat and Southend players were falling over themselves in their eagerness to try and get him sent off. Did most of his good work chasing down midfielders.
Rodman 3 one decent mazy run in each half, otherwise anonymous for the 70 minutes he was on the pitch
Reilly 3 took one ball down well but saw nothing there suggesting he should oust anyone in the starting xi
Jakubiak 2 we have NOLE (not on long enough) perhaps we can have DTTBE (didn't touch the ball enough) too? His most effective touch was to wrestle the ball out of a sluggish Southend grip too aggressively ensuring both he and his opponent received yellows and thus succeeded in turning a mildly annoying 30 second delay into an officious extended period of no action boredom.
Ref 2 crap ref for a crap game...at least he didn't ruin a good one!
Crowd 4 nothing to encourage them out of first gear
Southend 4 almost as rubbish as us ...but not quite.
