Well another shocker of a result as a reasonable side were made to look like world beaters as for the god knows how many times this season and the second half of last season we allowed opponents to get into their stride and pass the ball about and we3 played like the away side on the break and with most players behind the ball we still managed to allow Doncaster players the freedom of the park at times.
When will DC see that this tactic had given up on him about 50 games ago? We dust ourselves down and come out and do the same things again and again and despite trying to put most of the blame on the owners and praise up the fans DC himself and his coaches are the main cause of the problems. Ok the budget is not great BUT look at the players in the squad yesterday and I will go as far as to say that as a squad there are few squads in this division that will have as much experience and probably not that many that will have cost as much! The interviews are now catching up with a Manager that has totally lost his way and who with every word he speaks seems to be dragging himself out of despair. if the club means so much to you Darrell please do us a favour and walk away. I suspect the money that awaits him if the Board sack him is too great to give away because I really don't see any club in this division and certainly the one above taking a chance on a youngish Manager so stuck in his ways. Some will say I am being very harsh in view of the budget but lets be fair to the Board as well DC has been given the opportunity to sign a striker for £350,000 and £200,000 and a fair few players in the £100,000 bracket as well as quite a few experienced players that have come in on what must be a quite expensive contract. For me he has not proven that he can spend money wisely and too often our squad when we have started the season has been unbalanced and rarely do we "take off" before October let alone "the landing lights down"!
Anyway yesterdays game I could pretty well write the same thing as most other weeks - unnecessary changes made, questionable tactics, missed chances, bad luck, poor marking, too many players just being left behind the ball, lacking any real pace, failing to pressurise opponents and not marking and disorganised when we lose possession. These were all visible in abundance yesterday.
Before I go on to individuals may I just ask myself why despite all I write week in week out do I have such doubts about sacking a Manager who appears to have no answers to our problems? There are two reasons 1) Every season DC has managed to turn the season around in the second half of the season. 2) I have little or no faith in the owners to appoint a better replacement and maybe despite everything we just have to say "Better the devil you know".
Bonham 5.5 Couple of good saves early on but his confidence looks like its starting to go a bit which is hardly surprising in the circumstances.
Partington 2 Another absolute shocker. One I would try to get rid of in January and choose between Leadbitter and James Clarke and stick with them.
J. Clarke 5 An Ok game despite a couple of slack moments.
Lockyer 5 Some good moments but also plenty of shaky ones too. can't really pass a ball and too much onus is put on that by players passing back so much.
Craig 5 Same as Lockyer
Martin 5.5 Reasonable performance except on one goal but the whole problem with attacking full backs is when the ball is lost they can be completely left out of position and also as regards discipline in the team you can be left with your centre forward caught at full back as Payne did in the first half!
Lines 4.5 Is he past it or just asked to play so deep. Those runs are becoming less and less and no justification in playing him over Upson.
O. Clarke 3 Another who has drifted back to old frustrating ways and as he has been substituted in most of his recent games why oh why was he selected to start. unlucky with a shot that hit the post in the first half especially as Donny went straight down the pitch and scored.
Sercombe 6 MOM The best of a poor bunch overall. gave his all throughout but he had little support.
Nichols 5.5 If he was a midfield player I would have given his performance a 7 but he is NOT! he is a bloody striker with the most awful scoring record for us I can ever remember. Perhaps as we are unlikely to get anywhere near what we paid for him we should play him in midfield and put two strikers in front of him.
Payne 5 IMO the first 45 minutes were his best for us and twice unlucky not to score. I must be one of the few who think he is worth persevering with and that there is better to come-maybe under a different manager with different ideas.
Subs: Bennett 5 Another who for some reason finds it easier to hit a six inch wide object (the woodwork) to the bloody goal. Flatters to deceive with some lovely ball skills that you can admire when we are winning but become increasingly frustrated with when we are in a relegation battle.
Rodman 5 He should have started preferably about 3 months ago. Like some others in the squad he needs a run of games or he will follow in the footsteps of Montano and Balanta. There must be more to it than poor form when so many players are in the same category. Has the pace and shot to be exactly what we are lacking.
Jakubiak 4.5 No impact but surely must be frustrated by rarely being picked by the manager despite doing something in the week which our other "strikers" have failed to do..
Crowd 5 There is little to cheer at the moment and it looks like there is more of this to come as we are a club in a downward spiral both on and off the pitch..
Ref 6.5 One of the better ones.
Doncaster 8 made to look a fantastic team , probably pretty ordinary as they managed few shots but the most of them went in unlike the other team on the pitch!
DC Lets start with the team selection - why was it necessary to replace Leadbitter with the clearly regularly out of form Partington? Why bring back two players Lines and Ollie Clarke one of whom (Lines) has totally failed to set the world alight this season and the other been substituted in most of the recent games he has played? Why drop a player who has actually scored a goal recently (Jacubiak) and dropped Rodman and Upson after a reasonably lively performance in the week? I could go on but I have covered this most weeks and no lessons are learnt as we do the same things again and again.
So we move on to next week at Sunderland....oh dear..... what better place to win again? What team will Dc put out? Who bloody cares but there will probably be 5 changes.
