LOL we are talking about Rovers and how they are just completely overlooked and unrated in a game who's USP is detail and played by millions, who are you to dictate what we talk about, this is the FM thread, you want the hardcore Anorak thread.
Yes you can still get to prem if you play your cards right but i like to have a core of home growns in the team and Rovers not only have zero but the fm lot haven't even made and attempt to rate them it seems,

FM has all of our youngsters on there, from Luke Russe down to James Spruce etc. all rated. Are you sure you're not just playing on a small database?

Only just got FM19. Didn't particularly like it at first due to the new feature for lower leagues where most foreign players won't move country if the club reputation is low. No issues with the Rovers player database, Lockyer is usually one of the best players due to age and potential ability, same again this season.
Unfortunately Rovers don't have much going for them financially, and a high value bank loan so expect ongoing monthly losses. Had to sell anyone of value to make sure there was money for the rest of the season, which is fine because you can replace with free transfers with better ability. Needed cup runs to top up the bank balance.
First season was more of a grind than usual because of the debts - wasn't able to get in more than 2 players over 4k a week. 2nd season in the Championship is bringing even more losses - the directors added another 3m loan pre season and wages have had to double just to be competitive. Only a 4k extension on the stadium. 2nd season in, and going well in the Championship. After 15 games only dropped 4 points. Later on I'll suggest some signings for first season.

I'm doing another run with Rovers, and for those who don't know, many youngsters' (particularly the ones who aren't already known outside their club etc) potential abilities aren't fixed, they're either completely random or set to a particular interval.
Long story short, Josh Bailey from the development squad is being harassed by Real Madrid, Manchester United, Liverpool and PSG in the first season. lol

Unreal. Remie Streete, CB available on a free and get Danny Loader on loan from Reading if possible.

Also, currently 5th place in League 2 with 10 games played.
At first I tried a very defensive 5-3-2 under the Catenaccio philosophy, but 5 draws in a row apparently is too much for the fans and press and they started to put pressure on my job - how realistic! - and I switched to a high-tempo, pressing 4-4-2 Diamond, with two CMs instead of wingers. Won 4 and drew 1.
Current team is
GK: Smith, as a Sweeper Keeper on Support duty
RB: Connor Randall, on loan from Liverpool, as a Wing Back on Attack duty CB: Tony Craig, as a Central Defender on Cover duty CB: Brendan Galloway, on loan from Everton, as a Ball Playing Defender on Defend duty LB: Holmes-Dennis, as a Wing Back on Attack duty
DM: Ogogo, as a Defensive Midfielder on Support duty CM: Bailey, as a Deep Lying Playmaker on Defend duty CM: Sercombe, as a Mezzala on Support duty AM: Lines, as an Advanced Playmaker on Attack duty
ST: Reilly, as a Poacher on Attack duty ST: Clarke-Harris, as a Target Man on Support duty
This is a very common formation here in Brazil, to the point of being frowned upon due to how overused it's been for the last 10 years, but in FM-England it seems to be doing the trick just fine

FM does have 'scouts', researchers and the like but it's hard to find enough with some judgment and knowledge at the lower levels (probably a job for pirate lol). My brother does this exact role for the FIFA games but those are significantly more popular than FM. Either way, agreed that it would be nice to at least have a range of potential abilities rather than lucky dip. I recall selling that German kiddie Dunwald to Wigan for £400k in my first season, which effectively helped fund my promotion tilt.

These are who I found particularly useful in my first season:
Marin Orsulic (free) (DC) Aislan (free) (DC) Guido Dal Cason (free) (SC) Juliano (free) (DM / MC) Louis Samson (free) (DC, DM, MC) Sebastian Gallegos (free) (AMC / SC) Jacopo Furlan (free) GK ....could also go for Johny Placide
All of which will either not need work permit, or will be accepted Edit: should point out this is large database + Europe born players
