Only just got FM19. Didn't particularly like it at first due to the new feature for lower leagues where most foreign players won't move country if the club reputation is low. No issues with the Rovers player database, Lockyer is usually one of the best players due to age and potential ability, same again this season. Unfortunately Rovers don't have much going for them financially, and a high value bank loan so expect ongoing monthly losses. Had to sell anyone of value to make sure there was money for the rest of the season, which is fine because you can replace with free transfers with better ability. Needed cup runs to top up the bank balance. First season was more of a grind than usual because of the debts - wasn't able to get in more than 2 players over 4k a week. 2nd season in the Championship is bringing even more losses - the directors added another 3m loan pre season and wages have had to double just to be competitive. Only a 4k extension on the stadium. 2nd season in, and going well in the Championship. After 15 games only dropped 4 points. Later on I'll suggest some signings for first season. My personal first-year recommendations are: Andre Almeida for Vitoria Guimeraes youth team. 17yo Mezzala CM available for approx £75k if you have Portugal loaded. Unreal. Just had a look on my save - still at V Guimaraes but that's a great signing for league 1 and Prem potential - a real bargain for £75k

I'm doing another run with Rovers, and for those who don't know, many youngsters' (particularly the ones who aren't already known outside their club etc) potential abilities aren't fixed, they're either completely random or set to a particular interval. Long story short, Josh Bailey from the development squad is being harassed by Real Madrid, Manchester United, Liverpool and PSG in the first season. lol Exactly, i have seen adverts for Rovers researchers on the FM site so all of of our prospects are basically in name only, i wouldn't mind an ability range as at least they may have had a look at them and made a judgement but leaving it totally blank means they don't exist on the game, IRL one could be 5''6 playmaker and in the game he could be 6''2 ball winner it's not every lower team but alot and the staff must have little favourites because i did a Foggia save and the the players had almost too much detail, fav personel, about 5 preferred moves each, But as much as i want to do a Rovers one i find our players very bland on paper, plus i would like to produce a 'South West' team made up of players purely from our region but we aren't a very fertile ground Well, yeah, but it's not like they don't do any research. When you create a player into the game's database, you can select a "role preset" for the random attributes to align in a certain way.
So if I've never seen, say, James Spruce playing aside from U23 matches, but I do know he's reminiscent of a Poacher type of player, I can select the Poacher preset and the algorithms take care of the rest.
The potential ranges are from 0 to 200, and you can set custom intervals of -1 (0-20) to -10 (180-200) for youngsters so that they have varying potential ability within a certain spectrum. That's the best they can do, unfortunately, since simulation games still (mostly) can't predict the future. In fact, when it comes to wonderkids, FM is more miss than hit lol
I think your "South West" project is hard to do not because of a lack of detail in the game, but due to how bloated the market is compared to the financial reach of League One clubs. You go to, say, Fleetwood to try and nick their third choice CB and the man costs your entire budget... and almost no good players are off-contract since we're playing with the last update, which was made during the running season. Maybe now that the retained lists are coming up some generous soul at those FM forums will come up with an update with tons of free agents to sign
