As founding member of the DC fan club, let me start off by saying that the man is a Bristol Rovers legend and would have retained my support even if he’d taken us down this season.
However, I’m not sure I fully understand the “not as good a manager as DC” argument I’ve seen written on here a few times as the reason for not wanting one of the names touted as his potential replacement.
If we were replacing the DC who delivered the incredible back-to-back promotions and built exciting, attacking teams with an unbreakable resilience and never-say-die attitude, then I’d agree.
But the harsh reality is - we’re not. IMO the DC who left the club last week was unrecognisable from the man AND manager who gave us those glorious memories, and has been for a long time.
I couldn’t possibly disagree with anyone who suggests that Flynn, Hurst, Cotterill, Waddock, Holloway etc. aren’t a patch on the DC of 2014-16. But we’re not replacing him, we’re replacing the frustrated, fed-up and exhausted manager who has overseen poor football and even poorer results for the last 12 months now.
I’m still gutted DC is no longer our manager and hope we see him back in our dugout one day, but I think we’re in danger of believing we’re replacing the DC of old, not the one who left.

Of the ones mentioned Cotterill has won promotion from L1, but would he do it on our budget? Holloway has done it in this league and the Championship and unnerearthed some great players from lower leagues. Is he past his sell by date now? Flynn young hungry having success in L2 will that convert to success in L1? Whaddock has come close with the cheats could stabilize the club, but can we ever forgive him?
My worry is not how good the new manager is as a coach but how well he can deal with our owners

Not sure why anyone is thinking beyond Coughlan
He's the cheapest option and a very well placed source tells me that's the way it will stay for short - med term
He also knows the players the best so unlikely to see much in the way of January action
Already dropped Nichols and Payne so shows some signs of having his own ideas on things
Could become popular very quickly if we string a few wins together

Will he be able to / have the skills to sign loans /permanents to keep us up ? Not sure he can do it. Keep him as the defence coach - he has improved things there. Still hope it's Hurst or Bowyer but I bet this is going to drag on in true Rovers fashion.

My worry is not how good the new manager is as a coach but how well he can deal with our owners I don't think what City were spending around Cotterills time as manager was much different to ours. Obviously Lansdown had the funds but they didn't spend that big. Possibly their wage budget was considerably higher, but there's not much in it in regards to money spent on transfers. Aden Flint cost less than Tom Nichols, and he was probably the best centre back at that level and is one of the best in The Championship. His goal scoring record p*sses all over Nichols too. Marlon Pack cost less than Sercombe, a regular for City in The Championship. Luke Ayling and Luke Freeman cost similar fees to Partington and Mensah. Both are Championship players. Other key players were Mark Little, Corey Smith, Wade Elliot and Aaron Wilbraham all signed on for minimal fees or Free Transfers. City won this league at a center with 99 points scoring 96 goals, playing exciting Football. I'd be happy if Cotterill got us playing at just a quarter of that level. Of all the names mentioned, Cotterill is the best for me.

It'll be the easiest, cheapest option.

I’d have Andy Tilson over quite a few who have been mentioned. Still coaching at Exeter I believe but worth a chance surely?

It'll be the easiest, cheapest option. Says it all really... if this is the approach we are preparing for league 2 already. Please find an experienced manager that is still hungry for success Wael.
