www.bbc.com/sport/football/47640976Anyone else read this? I found it really interesting as I've always wondered. A few points stick out what a few clubs do: So how is a shortlist drawn up? And when does that process begin? Worryingly for managers - but maybe reassuringly for fans - there is often a constant shortlist being worked on behind the scenes. "I always had a list of six or so managers who I was tracking all the time," says David Sharpe, who appointed three managers during his three years as Wigan Athletic chairman.
At this stage clubs may also field CVs, usually sent in by agents. If your club have ever said they have had "50 or 60 applications for the job" then that is probably true, although Sharpe - who has just started work as a football agent - has a word of warning for potential managers sending in their resumes. "To be honest, if you're picking your next manager from an unsolicited CV sent in then it shows you haven't done the work in preparation." he says.
Some "real world" factors are still key for managers taking a job too, especially lower down the ladder. Pay and the dreaded commute come into a decision, as not many managers want to relocate their families - wise considering the amount of time they are likely to get in a job.
Found it really interesting, doesn't seem to show us in a great light post DC, however, should we have expected them to be better prepared? DC was here for years, longer than Starnes, Wael, Hamer etc. Either way, it's worked out with GC so far though & long may that continue

Not necessarily. GC could have been the plan all along, with 5 or 6 backup choices.

Not necessarily. GC could have been the plan all along, with 5 or 6 backup choices. Quite. I thought it was said GC was close to getting the Plymouth job previously, so Martyn Starnes was obviously aware of him.
We don't know how DC would have talked about him either

The last paragraph explains it all in our case. GC would not have had to relocate and I'm sure he got a pay rise.

I don't know if he still lives there. Surprised his kids watch Sheffield United. I thought they would have watched their dads old side Sheffield Wednesday.
