I’d like to see messi run and cross the same ball like Harold played with and get a pittance for playing. He could just about afford his cigarettes.

Messi all day long for me. Not much between the two statistically but Messi is far better to watch and is more of a team player, always get the impression that Ronaldo plays for himself first and foremost. Probably the two best off all time and lucky we've been in an era when we've been able to watch it all.
Made me think what a great era we've had in the last 20 odd years. Tendullkar, Lara and Warne in cricket, Messi and Ronaldo in Football, Bolt in athletics, Woods in Golf, Federer and Nadal in tennis, Lomu in Rugby, O'Sullivan in Snooker, McCoy in racing, Schumacher and Hamilton and F1.

I'm with you Pirate. Impossible to prove who is the best ever of course, but for me Messi is the best I have ever seen. Certainly a player who can excite a crowd far more than Ronaldo, who is also of course a brilliant player. Just feel blessed to have seen them both. I showed my son some highlights videos from YouTube from some of the all time best. We saw Pele, Stanley Matthews, Maradona, Cruyff, George Best, Cristiano Ronaldo and Messi. I know it’s far from a comprehensive list. When I started doing it I had in my head that Pele would come out best, and he nearly did, but even his best bits couldn’t top Messi’s for individual brilliance, in both my opinion and my son’s. Sheer genius. A world cup win may have settled any argument about the best ever but unfortunately Argentina have been a basket case for years.

When Messi wins championships and scores goals for multiple clubs in multiple countries then he can lace Ronaldos boots.

It's odd how the lack of a World Cup win is often used against him. You need a team to win that (it's a myth that Maradona won it on his own, although was obviously massively influential!), but we're judging a single player here. Anyway, the Champions League is a higher standard than the World Cup these days.

When Messi wins championships and scores goals for multiple clubs in multiple countries then he can lace Ronaldos boots. Not doubting Ronaldo's brilliance for a minute, but why does it matter how many countries they have played in? You could just as easily look at Messi's goalscoring record against English sides (something like 25 goals in 30 games) as 'evidence' of his genius. That's against the best sides in England, the ones who qualify for the Champions League. That's a record superior to Ronaldo's. Both great players, but if I could only watch one it would be Messi. PS: How did a thread about a Coventry right back turn into this?!!!

Ronaldo is a far better player than the one team wonder that is Messi. Lionel Messi scored his 51st goal of the season recently and secured the European Golden Shoe thanks to his 36 goals in the Spanish top-flight. He has made history by winning a record sixth golden shoe. Messi vs. Ronaldo: 2018-19 club statistics Messi for Barcelona: 51 goals, 19 assists, 50 matches 1.02 goal ratio Ronaldo for Juventus: 28 goals, 10 assists, 43 matches 0.65 goal ratio All-time career (club and country, but excluding club friendlies): Ronaldo: 686 goals and 218 assists in 960 appearances Messi: 668 goals and 271 assists in 816 appearances Career goal ratio: Ronaldo 0.71; Messi 0.82 2 quite different players. Ronaldo is all about power , height , heading and pace Messi is a quality skillfull player a real twinkle toes. They both take an amazing free kick and are both attacking players but other than that quite different. Hard to say who’s the best because they’re so different but the fact that Ronaldo has played all around the world and been a world beater and Messi has stayed in his comfort zone at Barca pushes Ronaldo to the top for me. I actually don’t particularly like Ronaldos smug grin or his arrogance but we’re talking about ability and achievements not personalities. If Messi left Barca and played in a few other countries that would be good to see how he could adapt. I personally don’t think he would adapt as well as Ronaldo has.

Someone told me the other day that Emile Heskey has scored more in the knock out rounds of the World Cup finals than Ronaldo and Messi put together.

Also got to add that Tom Davies has probably now been well and truly put off signing for us if he’s read this as he feels it’s highly unlikely he’ll ever be as good as either.

Yeah, that's probably the reason he doesn't want to sign for us......... Only probably though , not definitely. We have got a couple of grand spare now we’ve lost a couple of players, which will help him afford a sausage roll at half time , the new score board must appeal etc , actually maybe we should make a cheeky offer for Messi. We are an attractive proposition. Nah he’d just get kicked first game and his season would be over.

Ronaldo is a far better player than the one team wonder that is Messi. Nah Hugo I'm not having that. Some of the stuff Messi has done over his career is unbelievable. The solo goal where he took on half of the Madrid team at the Bernabeu in a Champions League semi final is something I'll never forget. Ronaldo is a devastating player don't get me wrong and has had an amazing career but I don't have memories of him doing incredible things like I do of Messi.

It’s so hard to call but I just cannot warm to Ronaldo. I know personality shouldn’t come into the conversation but the guy is a grade A plum.

I thought Tom Davies was a centre half. Jack Grimmer is the right back
