I've always been told that the saddle should be at the height where you can put you toes, but not your heels to the ground when stopped. Today I did a 15 mile ride with a serious lycra clad cycling fanatic, who told me this is bollox. The saddle should be at the level of your hip bone, and to reach the ground, you need to tilt the bike. So up the saddle must go. I've tried this, and observations: a) it's much more efficient when going uphill because you extend your leg almost, but not quite, completely. b) the feckin saddle is so high now that I can't get off without falling off the bike in a very embarrassing way. It's not just getting off the bloody thing, it's getting back on as well.

Not as embarassing as going out with clip in pedals for the first few times. Unclipped one foot to stop at a junction and then leaned to get off the wrong side - Timber !!!!

I'm still cycling. I had a two week break in July. First I had a strain in the hip area, which kept me off the bike for one week, and the second week was just too hot! In that two week period it didn't drop below 35C during the day! When it was 42C it was basically unhealthy to ride the bike. However I still managed 180Km (111 Miles) in July. I'm targeting 500Km (310 Miles) for August.

Have built up to six miles in total yesterday but will be another three or four weeks before I can think about cycling or jogging again. Would be going stir crazy if it wasn't for the Ashes and other sport to watch at the moment. Will probably miss the first two Rovers home games as well although I've not written the prospect off just yet! i don't blame you for taking a break in the hot temperatures, almost inhumane to exercise in those conditions. Good idea to keep a record of what you're doing and setting targets. Keep it going!!!

Once the rib cage and wound has healed I should be able to step up the exercise and get back to my usual 4x8 mile runs per week and a weekend 50 mile cycle. avoiding certain publications and websites whilst recuperating just in case !!!!

I walked the South Downs Way last week. 120 miles in 6 days. Totally shattered at the end but it was worth it, especially since I did it with my new lady friend....

It's a cracking route. Did it a few years ago on mountain bikes. In 1997 I ran it, or at least 80 miles of it, from Petersfield in Hampshire to Eastbourne in Sussex. It was the world trail running championship, that year. Still got the tee shirt.

Are you sure that wasn't a prison break?

I did see some people running it when I was on my bike - must admit "nutters" came to mind! I've ran three marathons in the past but the thought of running an inch more than the 26 miles and however many yards makes me feel sick!!!

Due to several visits and stays in hosp over the last few years this thread spurned me into doing something about my health, used to get through 4oz of baccy a week which equates to between 30 to 50 a day , due to a massive down me and wend have given up smoking last fag about 6 to 8 weeks ago. Tuesday we went down the glos road for some meat, so we walked about 3.5 miles (1/2 of the journey carrying 16kg) , this may seem a small distance to many, but in the last 18 months i have only left the house about a dozen times mainly vet appointments for my self. So thanks for starting the thread it spurned us into trying to get fitter

Have a go at the Tough Guy, Eric.
Nothing cogent keeps you going, the first time you do it; just the desire to keep moving forward. It`s never so bad on subsequent races.
