Time waits for no man, some say. As I'm approaching sixty this year I thought it's time to get the ole bod back in shape. It's been five years since my heart attack, and to be honest I haven't really done much fitness work since that time. Apart from popping down to the gym once a week (which I hate). I have a young lad who keeps me busy with football, cycling, swimming etc, but I am well aware my own body needs some decent hard graft. Having spent half of my life in the super fit category I am now feeling my age. I need to sharpen up.
So, to start I am going to cycle to work! It's a distance of about 20km. Half of the distance is a path along the River Main, which is nice. Then there is a small piece where I have to mix with the traffic in the city, before hitting the rural cycle paths again. I'm planning on doing this three times a week, with Swimming twice a week as well. I'll soon be back in shape and I'll probably stop feeling uncomfortable wearing my Mankini. On my way home tonight I shall buy my first ever cycling helmet. I grew up without one and I've never worn one as an adult, but I have a stretch of about 3 or 4km in the city.
Next year, the Tour de France !
PS - If it rains I'll probably catch the train.

Remember years ago, Chris Boardman won the Olympic Gold with a bike he claimed that he had made from a washing machine?
I'm calling borrux to that whole story.
I've now dismantled the washing machine, and I'm buggered if I can find some wheels, gears, a chain, pedals, or set or handlebars !

I use the Bristol to Bath cycle track and have seen far more cycling accidents on there than I do on the roads so definitely worth investing. I recommend finding one with a mesh inner to keep the flies and wasps off your bonce - nothing worse than a wasp in the helmet region! After a a heart attack is it worth asking your cardiologist to arrange an exercise ECG to determine a safe level at which to exercise? You can then get a smart watch with Pulse reading to make sure you exercise within safe limits. I use one and it's really useful.

I have an ECG every six months and a blood test every three months, all part of the Heart Monitoring Health Service I receive. Because Germany has an Insurance Based Health Care the insurance companies are happy to pay for monitoring and preventative stuff, as usually if something bad is caught earlier it is cheaper to fix than when it goes tits up.

I can't be arsed with the posers in the gym and my knee is a bit knackered so I can't run, but I bought a bike last year. The last time I cycled was in about 2002 when I did the London to Brighton bike ride. I'm finding it difficult but it's ok.
I mainly walk to keep fit. Ish.
I do a minimum of three miles a day, and every other day do 8-10 miles, about three hours.
I am retired now. I have the time. Sometimes it's a pain (metaphorically and literally) but I feel good afterwards and bad if I don't do it.

So, I managed to get into work. Google Maps said it would take 1hr 9mins and I did it in 1hr 15mins, mainly because I took a wrong turn towards the end which led me on a slightly longer path. Never mind, I fully expect to get that time down as my fitness improves, and I make some minor changes to the route. I swear I was 'flashed' by a speed camera, but it may have just been sunlight reflecting off some glass. I could also go faster along the section which runs alongside the river, but there are so many Swans, Geese and Duck there that it seems wrong just to flash past them. It's nicer to go a bit slower and appreciate them, especially as they all seem to have their Ducklings waddling along with them.
All-in-all it was a good run. The sun was shining, temperature about 15 degrees, lot's of bright young things (and some not so young) going for their morning run alongside the river, so there was plenty to perve look at.

As I progressed into my 40's it developed (to use a better word) to a 34". The world was a fine place. However, a few weeks back I had to buy some new trousers/jeans and I was horrified to find that 34" was just a tad tight, and I needed a 36". So that was a 36" waist with a 34" length. Was I actually wider than I was longer? How the feck does that work?

I was 6'4 ins and weighed a trim 13 st now 64 and waist gone the same way as yours and weight 15st 12 lbs . When I have my annual medical the doc says that's more my natural weight so I have convinced myself that I was drastically underweight at 13 st! !

I'm 6' 1" and currently weigh-in at around 14st 11lbs (94Kg). In the past 14st was my 'fighting' weight. I'm not overweight, but the middle is thickening up a bit. My Doc suggested to me that sex is a good way to lose weight. I had to tell him that 30 seconds every nine months was not going to help much !
