Does anybody know why Japan and Qatar are participating in the Copa America? Does anybody care? Qatar probably paid a shed load of money to play in it, as they need some experience against real teams before they get humiliated in the world cup.

Just thought it was a bit strange and unfair on the South American teams that missed out.

I think they always invite a couple of extra teams to make up the numbers. This year they invited the two Asian cup finalists. Mexico have featured the most although Japan have also been invited in the past. Even Spain were invited one year, although they turned down that invitation.
It would make better sense to have one tournament for both north and South America.
