Great day out on the train for a change even if it did take an age to get there and get back but it was worth it to see a potential banana skin easily overcome by a squad of players that you know are going to give their all which is something we haven't been able to say for a few years. It is true to say that the majority of upsets in the cup are caused by having players who cannot motivate themselves to play against lower class opposition and fail to live up to the League status they hold.
I will start by commenting on the formation and the clear change in the role of Lee Brown which IMO was the biggest factor in the way we played because most of the time you do not need four defenders provided the ones left MARK their players and move up when we are attacking. My biggest criticism this season is that when we play with four at the back we defend far too deeply and the defenders take far too long to get out. A good move by the Manager who also clearly saw when he watched Dorchester that they perhaps lacked pace at the back.
Mildenhall - 5 Can't really give a higher mark because I can't recall him making a save.
Lockyer -6.5 Played very well defensively showing good positional sense and awareness of players around him. I actually thought his passing was better yesterday and overall played a good game.
Trotman - 7 Another powerful display from our key man at the back although im not sure if he should have been marking the player who scored their goal or whether it was Parkes but in view of the size of the bloke it should have been!!
Parkes - 6.5 Some idiots have started giving him abuse from the terraces and along with Taylor it seems he is the latest for the Boo boys however I thought he had a pretty solid game and gave little away. Players at this level WILL make mistakes and I think we have to accept that and ENCOURAGE them to be on top of their game. I really don't see what pleasure these "supporters" get in picking on individuals and ridiculing them at the game particularly when they have a generally sound and powerful performance as Tom gave yesterday.
Brown - 8 Was pretty well a wing back for most of the game and excelled in the role. Had good ball retention and drove forward well. Provided an excellent through ball to send Ellis clean through.
Gosling - 7 I really don't think Gosling knows how good he could be. Has excellent awareness and ability on the ball and could really be an outstanding player with a little more confidence. Playing against his ex side he showed a lot of his skill and potential and caused Dorchester a lot of problems.
Mansell - 8 Goal of the match and covered every blade of grass. Controlled the midfield and always wanted the ball and sought to win the ball at every opportunity. Has one hell of a shot on him and would like to see him driving forward more often. A great Leader on the pitch and is clearly enjoying his football.
Clarke - 7 A much better performance from him all round although he wouldn't be in my starting eleven but is a more than adequate squad player. Not convinced that against better opposition he can give the sort of performance he gave yesterday but if he could then he would change my overall opinion of him.
Monkhouse -8 Two excellent goals and showed what an excellent player he can be for us as he won most balls in the air and he has good control of the ball. I really think he could do an excellent job in the middle of midfield for us where he would be involved much more. He is a great header of the ball and it would not surprise me at all if he scored ten or more goals this season.
Taylor - 7.5 Ran his socks off again and to add to that he did what he is paid to do and scored a goal in a good all round performance
Harrison -8 MOM Well for his hattrick alone he had to be Man of the Match. I really think now that he must be given a fair chance to show that he can do as regards consistency. Somebody commented that he didn't fight back to win the ball back when he lost it. To him i say if he scores the goals then he has done his job, thats why we have midfielders and defenders. I also see a player now who plays for the team and looks to bring other players in and he could be deadly if he receives more passes like the one from Lee Brown. That goal had all the markings of the David Williams/Paul Randall "partnership".
Overall it was the running that Taylor/Harrison did to lead Dorchester a merry dance but EVERY player played their part. I have not marked the 3 substitutes as although White did go close a couple of times and all three play a few decent passes they were not on long enough to really influence the game. Well done to Dominic Thomas on his debut.
Daryl Clarke - 8 Again he changed the style of the team and got it dead right. I actually think he shows strength by sticking with Matty Taylor although it remains to be seen if this side can perform consistently in the League matches but for yesterday it was a good formation and selection.
Finally I thought it was an excellent ground for the division which Dorchester play although the pitch itself looked a bit dodgy. Yet another excellent following considering the performance last week and certainly nobody can complain about the 90 minutes entertainment value and the quality od some of the interplay and the goals.
