So nothing has been submitted from BCC yet (after having a look on the website) - as I don't know anything about planning permission, when Wael said we've started the process, I guess this means talking with the council/ecology reports etc?
So far the last of any planning permission submitted at the fruit market was in 1986
PS, this isn't a bash - genuine question

I thought as soon as they'd submit everything then they'd be on the website. Good to know!

Why is it strange timing? Seems like Wael is damned if he says nothing and damned if he does say something! Whatever happens people will whine. No stadium news: whine Some stadium news: whine Spending on the team: whine Not spending on the team: whine No new facilities at the Mem: whine New facilities at the Mem: whine Not signing anyone: whine New signing: whine No communication from the club: whine Communication from the club: whine The only reason I'm looking forward to getting a new stadium, is reading on here all the things that are wrong with it. Purchase grapes from the Fruit Market: wine

After the entire UWE episode & the uncalled for and frankly disgraceful abuse WAQ received over it, I’m astounded that people think he would come out with a statement such as this just for popularity points. That much is just ridiculous. If anything I’d wager the entire plan is a lot further along, than he is initially letting on. you would have to think/hope so as Wael is setting himself up quite a bit otherwise
I would put myself in the cautiously optimistic pile at best and ambivalent at worst.
Don't see the point getting worked up about it all like some

It seems strange to me the way this was announced with zero build up, yet the club must have spent a small fortune producing professional videos for the season tickets & new shirts. As others have said there's still no news on the official club channels. Once more news breaks it will be interesting to see how much the project is going to cost and, more importantly, how it's going to be funded.

When I was talking to Directors back in the summer they said they were looking for a site with close rail links as after a recent survey results showed that 80percent of fans travelled to matches by car and this was far to high, the club are looking at laying on buses for fans traveling to the mem. So this site fits in with their strategy. I believe Councillors recommended the site to the club, so when it comes to getting planning permission it should be easier to achieve. Although traveling by car to the ground will not be easy so the club are hoping most people will use public transport. Another advantage of this site is that it is not in a heavy residential area so hopefully fewer objections by nimbies. Speaking as someone who normally gets to the Mem by car I think this policy of trying to increase use of public transport to get to the Mem is a great idea. If there could be a few park and ride schemes or something I'd almost certainly use them. The buses from Clutton/Radstock way are not very regular and are pretty slow but I'd have to get by by getting the bus to Temple Meads and walking across from there...Ark at I, getting way too ahead of myself! Google maps says 1 mile - reckon that's 15-20 mins walk.

Agree they don't have to provide transport, but they will have to have a credible transport plan as part of the planning permission.
To be honest I think everyone getting a bit carried away, far from a done deal and Wael himself said they were looking at several sites. The fact he choose to name the fruit market but none of the others is interesting. The idea of deflecting attention from another location, or even improving their bargaining position on another site is not beyond imagination.

I reckon now that they're allegedly talking to council they have come to the realisation that they can't contain the leaks and needed to rapidly get on the front foot. Whilst it was all in house they were fine as they now run a reasonably tight ship but once they're talking to council... if Henbury's mate at S Gloucs is anything to go by then nothing is sacred! No doubt BCC is similar.

Absolutely. I’m not at all sure why he would make this statement live on the radio prior to our first game of the season, if there was nothing behind it and/or was likely to never get off of the starting block.

Maybe they think it’s something else Nobby Mmm, can't be a BO problem. I always shower once every season, whether I need to or not. Anymore would be excessive, forget the winter shower and double up in the Summer.

After sitting on this for a couple of days, yes, it is potentially very exciting. Hopefully the type of site the stadium will be on would lead to something similar to Rotherham and Brentford's new ground, interesting and not uniform. However, as always I'm reticent about this actually happening. The club tie wears heavy, we've decades of proposed designs, sites and broken promises. Fair enough, we've been given a little bit of information, that's a start, but like many until we start building I won't truly believe.

Al Qadi also said that the Mem cannot be sold until the new stadium is given the green light by the Council. Cynical mind me! He said the only way we could sell the Mem is if we have secured a different stadium than the Mem. That is due to the covenant placed on the stadium by the previous owners.

If anything I would suggest Wael has gone off-piste under a little bit of pushing from Twentyman. Dwane Sports must be looking at some potential sites. This is almost most certain, or probable, or possibly just wishful thinking. I think Wael just decided on a whim that Fruit Market was the 'best one' to share. This would then placate supporters who have heard nothing at all year regarding a potential new site. IMHO far more likely that in 6-9 months we will hear that the project isn't viable. A bit like the pretend redevelopment of the Memorial Stadium. Even Wael's most ardent supporters would have to accept that that was a piece of pure fiction. For me - it just buys Dwane Sports some more breathing space. Believe it if you want to, I don't have a problem with that. But I don't.

We don’t want to sell the Mem on a wish and a promise that any new ground will be ok. With our record of putting in actual planning and that’s before the ground is actually ready that would be suicide, literally for us. That’s what happened to Brighton wasn’t it, sold the Goldstone without any certain replacement and then spent two years in Gillingham and then a few more in the Withdean? UTG!

That changes everything regarding the location. For some of these plans to come to fruition, access routes would be improved. Wow is all I can say, if we are formed as part of these plans, the area becomes fantastic. Without it im happy with it, this site will be incredible.

Anyone will think there is a car exclusion zone around this patch of land. There will probably be more parking around this site than the Mem and Ashton Gate put together. All it means that public transport is a much better option than it is now, so it’s a positive. I currently drive to the Mem, if we move to st Phillips, a train ride return from temple meads is going to cost £7.40. Or £14.80 for 2 adults, £20 + for a family of 4, against what now for you a fiver in fuel? Public transport is OK for one person who's got the time to spend an hour plus each way to and from the ground, a pain for anybody else. Personally I don't see the attraction of this site over the Mem or an out of town site like the UWE. We all find a way don't we. A lot of us got to Twerton regularly, I did somehow and I had sod all money.

Thank you for your rudeness and insulting words. It was a simple question that did not deserve that kind of response. However, in the interests of sensible debate, I admit to no knowledge of the planning process. That's why I asked the question. I hope this project works, but it can't be denied that there are obvious questions to be answered about it. Aside from questions of financing a large city centre site, realistically, are people going to get on their bike to go to a football ground? Buses are ok in theory, but Bristol has a bit of an issue with clogged up roads, so the system isn't the best. Rail traffic is horrendously expensive and wouldn't be an option unless you live in a different town or city anyway. It's all very well to say don't use the car, but until there are realistic alternatives that offer the same convenience, it's just not going to happen. That's not about football grounds specifically, that's a society thing. More parking in the area than the Mem and Ashton Gate? Really? I wish I could find some of it on a weekday morning before work! Seriously though, just an extra £7.40 will surely put some off what is already an expensive day. I don't know your journey of course but wouldn't that train ride be more expensive? I really hope we can make this happen, but I do think there will have to be some imaginative deals struck with local businesses and public transport providers first. As for car parking on site, BCC are hardly supportive of that in general at the moment.
