My last match before 6 months+ in Australia, so it was disappointing to draw a match we could have won. We were the marginally better side in the first half and the goal was well-taken - can't see how some think Bonham should have saved it. The second half was better; in fact it was a good game to watch. For a 20 minute period we played well, much like we did for most of the Burton game, and were well on top. The problem was that when we didn't score we went back to playing far too deep. They were not a bad side on the ball and, given ample space, they were well on top. playing well, putting us under so much pressure that we were lucky to get a draw in the end.
We all know that we are one or two players short, particularly in midfield, but for me the problem is the tactics, which must be down to GC. In this league, and especially playing a wingback system, it has to be all about pressing. When we press we look OK, largely because teams aren't good enough to play around a press. Yet, far too often we drop back and give the opposition far too much space. That's the frustration, because I would have thought it would be on an early page of the coaching manual.
As for performances: I'm afraid I am one of the posters who is not a great fan of OC; certainly I think it is a mistake to play him with Ogogo, who is more tenacious and less likely to give the ball away. At the back, while I'm not a Leahy fan, I don't think he was a liability yesterday, although. obviously TH-D would be a great improvement. The three in the middle at the back were solid, but none stood out for me. I hope Hare is OK, as, I agree with lots of posters, that Little was not up to speed when he came on. The goalie looks as though he has a mistake in him, but I wouldn't blame him for the goal, which came at him quite quickly. It was almost all down to Little who left a man in almost 10 yards of space. Up front, Smith took his goal very well and is lively, but the balls he was asked to deal with against a very physical centre-half were very difficult. JC-H is obviously a star, but still not a 100% match fit. I worry that he might be out for a time soon, as he always seems to be limping towards the end of the game.
One word on the Ref; rubbish. He refused to give cards in the first half for two fowls that stopped first JC-H and then Smith getting into a position for a shot or cross.
Onwards and upwards

As I said in anther thread it was when Hare was carried off the game changed. I also think we should play a different system at home to 5-3-2.

Agree about Hare, he was putting in some decent crosses in but it shows just how one dimensional we are. I thought Gills were rubbish for most the match, but they seemed to run straight through us in the closing stages and we were hanging on for a draw at the end.

You write a lot of good stuff Canberra - and obviously you know your football. But, I think you are harsh on our midfield - all 3 played well last night - and we bossed the midfield until the last 15/20 - it didn't help losing Ollie. Im always confident when Abu, Ollie and Ed are in the team - the only thing you might criticise them about is there goal contribution across a season - hopefully will be better this season ! We should have killed the game when were well on top - but JCH and others couldn't quite get that goal this time. When they brought their big n0.9 on - he helped to change things by holding the ball up and allowing more of their attacking players to get at us. I also thought their no.6 had an excellent second half - think his shot , led to the tap in. Fair play to Gills for staying in the game and finding another gear.

All goalies have a mistake in them. Think he has been a solid enough signing.

teanbiscuits - wouldn't you avoid the winter if you could? Gas Go Marching In - I agree he is a solid goalie for this division, but he juggled a couple of balls and the people around me held their breath
I will be back fot last few weeks of season, but am not holding my breath for the playoffs. Personally, I think J C-H will go in the January window, if he keeps fit, and a lot will depend on how much we get, how much we can spend and whether it is spent well! Onwards and upwards

Fair enough, not sure if you are just judging on last night though? As I really like him, the alternative however does make me nervy..!!

Jaakkola is a great keeper for this league. I’ve been impressed with him, running 15 yards and punching the Blackpool striker aside, he has done very well.
He actually saved the initial shot from Gills last night and saved another identical shot but a lot harder on 90 mins. If everyone in the back 5 would have been awake we would have cleared that goal effort too.

We look a much balanced squad than in recent years. When we first got promoted to L1, we had an extremely good attack with the likes of Bodin and Taylor but a poor defence that held us back. As our star players were sold, we became better defensively as we adjusted to the league but worse in attack and scored less goals, just the thought of going into the season with only Payne and Nichols to rely on like we did last year makes me shudder.
This season arguably we are competent in both areas, Davies, Jaakkola and Kilgour have so far seamlessly replaced Lockyer and Bonham and the JCH and Smith combo could go on to be the best strike partnership that we've had in the 4 years that we have been in this league.
The left wingback position could be improved, Leahy hasn't impressed me so far, very erratic at crossing the ball and not very effective defensively, I also feel we are missing something in midfield, Upson and Ogogo have upped their games to be fair to them but a midfielder with drive and capable of making defence splitting balls could improve us further.
We aren't too far off though I feel from being a top 10 team, It will just depend whether GC will have the budget to get what he needs in January and if we can remain injury free in areas that we look thin on the ground in terms of depth.
