Think it will depend on the individual's own 'thickness of skin' and capacity to self evaluate against what is likely to be a mixed reaction of fans, usually driven by emotive feelings which can be irrational at times.
There is the old argument that they chose to be in a profession which could lead to the type of things seen on most forums - not sure I buy this myself, as my behaviour is driven by my own compass, rather than the status of the individual.
To my mind, and think it was said earlier in the thread, I would never say anything online I wouldn't say face to face - treat others as you would wish to be treated.
So, unless the player was truly self aware and able to rise above some of the more questionable commentary, I would suggest reading the forums is probably not the best for their mindset.

Unfortunately it's the players family members who tend to visit the forums and they take it more personally than the players on most occasions.

Some years ago the old forum did a series of amusing photoshopped photos of Joe Anyinsah. I put these into a slide show and my friend and I who attended every home game at the time rewrote a Big Bopper track into 'The Joe Anyinsah song'.
It was supposed to be a joke for the forum and a few select friends but got a lot more views.
At the next home game Joe was on the bench. We stand behind the dugout and although we haven't confirmed this we believe Joe recognized us as he spent a lot of time staring at us like he wanted to kill us. It was under the nose of John Ward so he didn't have a Cantona moment thankfully.
The track did fizzle out because someone on OTIB claimed to be a great friend of ours and that I was a City fan winding up Rovers fans. This sadly became accepted as true and I stopped posting on here as there is not a worse insult than being accused of being one of that lot.
It did teach me that players do check this stuff and it's possible that they may confront you. Had Joe confronted my friend and I we were going to offer to sing the song live to him.

I'm pretty sure that the old os closed just before the start of the conference season, and gaschat started in April /may, so that thread would still exist somewhere within the guts of this place. Here's an early thread that just reminds me that despite the usership growing massively, our users haven't grown up at all gaschat.co.uk/thread/94/ras-team

I've no idea why I thought he played for us in the conference.... They were a couple of difficult years mind weren't they.... From the most depressing day ever against Mansfield to the most stressful day ever at Wembley....

Anyinsah was pre-relegation so would have been on the old forum Your right aren't you.... I've no idea why I thought he played for us in the conference.... They were a couple of difficult years mind weren't they.... From the most depressing day ever against Mansfield to the most stressful day ever at Wembley.... That was an absolute rollercoaster! The conference taught us a lot about ourselves and the club I think, and how we managed to come out and end up higher up in league one after coming straight back up and up again, some of the best years as a fan from the worst in my lifetime. Mansfield was painful and Wembley was stressful you're right!
