Just seen this tweeted by Tom Pope, Port Vale’s outspoken CF.
“First rule of football I tell any young player is don’t read, look or listen to any fans websites, forums or chats!!! Not only are the majority clueless but if you listen they can kill a career! Apparently a lot have said Pope is not an asset but a problem 😔😔😔😔 eat sh** 🖕🏻“
Lately I’d say it’s been positive on here, but I wonder what our players would think and take from our discussions.
If one of our players came on here I’d like to think they wouldn’t be down-heartened, however football supporters are relatively ruthless and I wonder if players do come on here and it affects them as a player and an individual if the criticism (today the least) is harsh and relentless.

Contradiction in terms from Pope there..
Says don't listen to fans on social media then tells them to 'eat sh**' for saying he's a problem..

Yes, it’s a good point. But I guess every forum has a range of posters ranging from fair to those who could be quite abusive. Having read other forums I think Gaschat isn’t too bad. Others, Burton’s, Tranmere’s seem ok and haven’t seen much abuse on them. But if I was the Sunderland or Portsmouth’s managers I would definitely avoid reading their forums. I think our players could come on here and not be too embarrassed but istr Summer 18 when we were desperate for strikers something about Rhys Healey from Cardiff was one of the rumours about coming here. Didn’t someone post about him reading the forum and changing his mind. I might be incorrect but I’m pretty sure it was a rumour, perhaps others know better. UTG!

Football fans make assumptions and opinions based on 90 minutes on a Saturday, they have no clue of the situations players are in, the problems they might have, what makes that performance. Everyone knows best, without knowing much at all.

I don’t know about our players reading stuff here but our owners and board do.
In fact our chairman is so taken by some of the comments he prints them off. I wonder if he has framed any of mine...🤔🤭

Everyone knows best, without knowing much at all. Yep! And too treat it as anything else would be foolish Look through the knot-hole lest ye be vexed comes to mind when thinking too visit if I was a player or staff! I can see the arguement about affecting a player as well, imagine Tom Nichols reading about himself over the past few seasons.. but still, I'd say he's the one getting paid to score the goals, not gossip on the internet (but even that said, that's why we're all here!!)

I can immediately think of a few players has been slaughtered on here in the past for various reasons - for example
Dominic Blizzard
Danny Coles
Mark Wright
Stuart Campbell
Tom Nichols Ed Upson
Even lazy fat bastard waste of time Rickie Lambert
I really don't think we are as ‘nice’ as we believe at times on here

If some of the people posting on here actually stopped and considered what they had written as if someone else was writing about them I think they would be extremely hurt. Virtually all of our players are treated like commodities at one time or another rather than human beings with feelings. Even the Beard was both lauded on one hand and dismissed as limited in very unflattering terms on the other, and that was for one of the most popular players of recent years.
If you were to receive a written appraisal at work which said f**king useless, hasn’t lived up to potential, hardly ever delivers, doesn’t put enough effort in, is too slow, is too old and should be moved on as soon as possible you probably wouldn’t feel particularly motivated to give your best. So imagine turning up on a match day knowing that not only the opposition but the home crowd as well are looking to criticise and jeer at you. It’s no wonder that some players are crushed by the level of vitriol aimed at them so I would definitely recommend that they did not read the forums.

Probably the best is of course Wael though not a player of course. Yet when someone on here calls another a name or writes negatively about them it becomes a bitch fight or it’s straight to the Mods. Players are not commodities but human beings with real feelings too so if you can’t take it on here don’t give it regardless

I have no doubt that some of our players come on here. It's an open forum for anyone to read and footballers have plenty of time on their hands and I'm sure like to know what's being said. Not surprised what Mr Pope has said, it would appear the norm for some people in professional football to claim those of us not involved have not got a clue about what we are talking about. That imho is not true and a quick look at MOD or Sky sports football punditry will tell you even some ex professionals have not got a clue about what they are talking about. The game is all about opinions and as far as I am concerned forums like this add to and not take away from supporting your favourite team.

Quite simply don’t say anything online that you wouldn’t be prepared to say face to face. Too many cowardly keyboard warriors in today’s world.

That was after the first game!

The world has changed hasn’t it? I remember getting used to email at work and thinking this is great but also thinking I’ve got to be careful what I say because although you can delete, as in these posts, it’s still there somewhere. When I email or post I have a simple rule, would I say the same thing to the persons face or wouldn’t I. If the answer is yes then I send or post. If I wouldn’t I don’t write it. So far it’s kept me out of trouble! So far.😉 So to answer the post, best not to look at it from a professional point of view. UTG!
