On t'other thread, Oldie is arguing against tougher sentencing. On this thread he is crying out as to what can be done to lower the amount of knife crime.......... Instead of arguing and moaning, maybe he can suggest what can be done? What is his opinion? Anyone can snip from the sidelines. You misrepresent me (per norm) I questioned whether was evidence that longer sentences are an actual deterrent. The experience in the states tells no, and our own police force, in recent interviews called it a blunt instrument. My personal opinion is that we are witnessing a breakdown of civil society. The causes are many, absentee fathers, water poor education, a breakdown in the provision of local facilities, families struggling to afford a decent home with the stress that brings to bear, a breakdown in the ability of the police to reduce drug related crime. It's going to be a hell of a road back from this mess. The fact that a microscopically tiny proportion of the UK`s population are stabbing each other over drugs territory, is not proof positive that we are "witnessing a breakdown of civil society". The huge and vast, and vastly huge proportion of people, do rub along together. Sometimes the relationship between different peoples is somewhat strained, but by and large it works. Just about.

Jesus, 149 in 2019 (so far) in London alone. Croydon stabbing: 60-year-old man knifed to death in London Case sparks 148th murder investigation in London of 2019 - the deadliest year since 2008 What price the reduction of 20,000 police? Personally I found it scandalous there was no mention of knife crime from any party in the election. Thugs with knives is obviously not considered an important issue in the grand scheme of things

Sometimes though, the headline grabbing horror represents just the tip of a greater malaise.

Apart from a brief spell in the early part of the 20th century, Britain is, and always has had, a violent culture.
Rising knife crime is one consequence of the strict gun laws we have in the UK, in my humble one.
It's a bad situation, but preferable to the shootout at the OK corral it might be if we ever relaxed gun control.
That doesn't answer or solve anything, of course, but I think it partially explains it.

Apart from a brief spell in the early part of the 20th century, Britain is, and always has had, a violent culture. I read a biography of Richard 1, a few years back. One of the chapters was devoted to stereotypes, as they were perceived in the middle of the 12th century. The French were haughty and treacherous. The Germans were rude and arrogant. The Italians were vain and cowardly. And the British were drunken and violent. Good job we've all moved on since, eh?
