That disallowed goal on Saturday divided two people on the Quest programme and really showed what a farce the authorities have made when changing the rule. For all its old faults (and there were plenty) they have actually made it worse. IMO whichever rule was used the decision to disallow the goal was correct whether Madden touched the ball or not. Under the old rules there would have been no doubt whatsoever as the lineman would have put his flag up straight away. On the quest progtamme Holloway as expected went with the decision but the other guest said it should have counted however if you read all parts of the offside law the new law says
"clearly attempting to play a ball which is close when this action impacts on an opponent or
making an obvious action which clearly impacts on the ability of an opponent to play the ball"
Madden made a CLEAR attempt to get a touch but was just too crap to actually touch it and how the guest could say it didn't put the goalkeeper off- of course it did. If the player had not run in it would have been a straight forward save of a cross shot but the player coming in would always put the keeper in two minds.
What made me laugh was that the linesman so say admitted he may have made a mistake - IMO this is Joey Barton trying to defend his actions OR the lineman not understanding the new rules because whichever he has made the correct decision by those rules. It further bewilders me what improvement generally a linesman not putting up his flag straightaway makes as it is far more frustrating now when the flag eventually goes up. To be honest I can't think of many rule changes that have actually improved the game. The only one I could really think of was the 6 second rule for goalkeepers which I thought was good but seemed to disappear! I am a firm believer in where you have a game that has been played for over 100 years there is no reason whatsoever to change the rules but if you are going to change them then you have to look at the pros and cons and actually visualise where it can go wrong. The goalkeeper taking the goalkick either side with the intent to speed the game up is a farce as surely it doesn't take an idiot to realise that the keeper would then legally go all the way from one side to the other to waste time. All that was needed was to speed the keeper up. The kick off now being able to be played back is another farcical rule that does not improve the game one iota.
I wont even bother with VAR which thank god doesn't get used at our level and I hope it never will. The only thing that was needed was goal line technology and leave the rest to the referee and linesmen. Opinions?

Definitely offside. As you say he went to play the ball, which effected the outcome.
If he didn't it would have been an easy save for the keeper. But he couldn't dive, until after he attempted to kick it.

The more you fiddle with laws the more difficult it becomes to judge easily. Looking at it Madden clearly tries to make contact with the ball and so Jaakola is aware of that. So he is influencing the play and brings himself into the action. Under the rules it is clearly offside. No question in my mind. What has created the fuss is the fact that Barton, doing his normal stuff, gets involved, gets abusive as per usual and gets himself sent off. Had it been a “normal” manager then it would likely have been a two minute argument at the 4th official, perhaps a yellow card and then forgotten. Unfortunately Fleetwood are becoming an image of their manager. And then if you put into the mix Quest trying to stir it up and create controversy where it doesn’t really exist you have the recipe for a story which will run for a week. I love the idea of having a two-hour show for the EFL but unfortunately Colin Murray and some guests are trying to be the story and not the football. UTG!

Who was the dickhead on Quest who said the goal should have stood? Clearly interfering with play whether he touched it or not! Trust Barton to make up sh** about the official apologising to him, what a load of old bollocks why would he apologise for the correct decision?

Wolves had a goal disallowed as a player was off-side by the width of a toenail. I would argue that 99.9 % of the player was actually on-side.So pleased we don't have VAR.

Absolutely nailed-on offside, no idea why it's even controversial. Not to be confused with VAR which is a whole other pile of sh**.

And this is why slowly and painfully I'm falling out of love with footy....
When you were a kid the reason you got into it was because it was a fast, direct, exciting thing.... And its a simple game isn't it? Personally I'll never attend a game or watch one on telly that has VAR because crap referees arnt a new thing are they, I think we got pretty used to them....
As for the pundits, they are the cause of all these problems, the media scrutinise everything, it then gets all bureaucratic and then it all gets ruined....

I like the Souness rule. Souness on sky sports came up with the idea that it should be based on the players defender and attackers feet only. So no armpit hair for example. When you have a striker bending his run and his feet is onside but then he is leaning into an offside position with his arm and shoulder, he should be classed as onside as his feet is still onside and his body leaning forward is a natural position. Shouldn't get penalised for bending his run timed perfectly.
As for Saturday, I think the right decision was made. He made a clear impact on Jaakkola's decision to wait.

What I will say in Joey Barton's defence is that either Garner or one of our players, backed up Barton's accusation about the linesman saying he made a mistake. If he has said that afterwards and not overruled that decision, I can understand Barton's frustration. The goal was rightfully disallowed imo though.

Steve who apart from Barton was confused by the offside laws, Madden was clearly offside so there's no issue with the laws at our level, the problem is higher up where VAR is just causing total confusion and I sense as a player is impossible to judge if your offisde or not. Unless FIFA want to see less goals scored the offisde rules need changing for VAR so margianl decisions go in favour of the goalscorer, not the defender.
I wonder if the prosecution in his forthcoming case will seek to use a video from Sunday's game to show just how Barton is unable to control himself at a football ground when decisions don't go in his favour!!

Nonsense Barton should have just accepted the decision, there were still 10 mins to go and Fleetwood were all over us, one day he'll end up seriously injuring somebody at a football ground. I don't understand how the Fleetwood owner puts up with Barton.

I was thinking the same thing. There is being passionate and there is just being a twat, and Barton definitely falls into the latter description.

For me it’s offside, but if Barton is going to make such a big fuss over that, how does he cope with blatant refereeing cock ups we get in the lower leagues. Ie. Phantom goal at Charlton, mystery penalties at Plymouth, red card for entering the field of play too early?

Footballs had it I’m afraid refs are humans who get things wrong all part of the game but now it’s fcuked. Madden was offside so F##k off Barton.

Topper Gas, Whoever it was on with Holloway. I just wish if people are going to go on and scrutinise decisions that they know the actual law before they comment or just admit they don't know the bloody thing and decline to comment. To me the best thing that could happen is to go back to how it was with Linesmen actually doing their job and putting their flags up straight away but we know they won't do that!!

If you were involved in an accident. The insurers say it is your fault, so you have to pay but then say it is not your fault, but you are still the one having to pay, how would you feel? I think the right decision was made, but it was a fairly subjective one.

I guess that's why Barton gets away with acting like he does if you feel he was right to carry on ranting like a nutcase until he got a red card. Although do you serioulsy think any ref is going to admit making a mistake anyway.

Half the fun of going to football is calling the ref a w**ker. It won’t be the same when it’s a drone hovering above the pitch.
