In the unlikely event that you have a few spare hours to yourself, "The Fear Index" by Robert Harris, is about exactly this. He normally writes historical novels, "Pompeii", "Fatherland" etc, but this is about a group of Hedge Fund managers, whose lives are turned upside down by inexplicable occurrences. Cracking read. I shall look it up, thanks. I do like to read and currently I've got about 150 books on my Kindle that I've read. That works out at about one book per month which is not bad going. It is worrying though. I'm an IT bod so I'm pretty switched on regarding this stuff but this with the Bosche Power Screwdriver has freaked me out a bit. I was on my own, I didn't talk, didn't walk in front of any smart tv's with it, there are no listening/Alexa devices upstairs in the house. My phone was downstairs as I'm the type that doesn't carry it around with me. In fact I can go days without even knowing where my phone is ! I'm not a phone freak.........so how did they know and start bombarding me with adverts for the exact same type of device, by the same manufacturer? Now you've recommended the book, if I download it do you think we will start getting "people you may know" stuff in Facebook trying to link us? Who knows, mate? It`s a scary old world. Perhaps you`re the unwittingly sole character in a reality tv programme, put on for the entertainment of the rest of the world. "The Nobby Show". I bet that thought hasn`t done anything to relieve your sense of unease, eh? But even if you are... I`m sure you`ll enjoy the book.

My understanding is that Alexa is always listening for her wake word ie "Alexa".
The information she captures is held on servers for a short period of time before being deleted.
Within that short time, she will pick up and use keywords that inform ad giving software to any other devices linked to that account, so phones kindles, TVs etc that are connected to the network and this feeds add choices presented to users.
I think you can turn off ad personalization on all those additional network devices and then it will stop.
I'm sure there was a case in the US where a bloke killed his wife and it was recorded and still stored on the Alexa servers and the FBI could play back the whole thing but that may be an urban legend.
I *think* the stuff she records is deleted after a few weeks as they simply dont have the bandwidth to save every conversation heard on every global smart device.
I have no doubt that something sinister will come to light one day though so maybe keep it turned off until you actually want to use Alexa for music or whatever?

Hi Nobby it's happening all the time ,we don't have anything like Alexa however on many occasions after a chat about something the products appear on our laptops and phones. I think the laptop camera is reversed and so is the audio I can't see any other answer but it wateres me of big time. Big Brother is watching us. I`m not terribly fussed really. I`ve never tried to access anything which is seriously against the law, so if the powers that be want to waste their time monitoring my activities, let them carry on.

We're usually quite tolerant of the usual misogynistic sexual bullshit that happens on here, but let's just think about stuff for a few seconds before posting your sexual fantasies, or whatever you think you're doing, please. Thanks.

I think the laptop camera is reversed and so is the audio I can't see any other answer but it wateres me of big time. The only answer I can come up with on this occasion is that the actual device (Bosche Battery powered screwdriver) actually sent or pinged a signal to say, the house Router. Once on there I'm pretty sure they can connect your Router with your phone number, and therefore your mobile number, e-mail account etc. From there it's just a small step to know your amazon account, facebook id etc etc and therefore the adverts start appearing. I'm fully aware that laptops/pads etc are constantly listening. In fact, anything with Alexa/Siri etc is constantly listening. The fact that Alexa/Siri are voice activated means they have to be listening all the time to enable them to work. That's a known.

This was on Click last year. Where they were trialling it no one was allowed to wear masks or balaclavas or anything similar. You faced possible arrest if you did not take them off, if I remember correctly one bloke did get arrested. All this in an open and free society.

They'll roll out these devises in a small area, then they'll say they're a success and have reduced crime, then they'll expand the project.... And how will they get the data? Well loads of people have tagged me on photo uploads on Facebook so that's my identity out there....

If you want to find what google knows about you visit ( takeaway google com ) . Some will be surprised with the amount of data they keep hold of. Just visit the site login to google and follow the instructions on screen, you need to tick all the boxes for all of your data. Just think if google hold this much data how much is held in other social media apps

Be honest Nobby it's the Viagra ads you're most worried about isn't it? C'mon you can tell us we're your Gas family. Whether you need it or not, Viagra is brilliant! Not needed here.
