Exclusive: Southampton and Bournemouth among clubs tracking Bristol Rovers defender Alfie Kilgour
Premier League clubs are interested in signing Bristol Rovers defender Alfie Kilgour after a stellar breakout season for the Gas.
The 21-year-old has become pivotal player for Ben Garner’s side in his maiden full campaign in the blue and white quarters, catching the eye of several clubs in England’s top two tiers.
Bristol Live understands Premier League sides Southampton and Bournemouth have sent scouts to watch the Gas academy graduate in action.
Millwall and Queens Park Rangers have also been keeping tabs on the centre-half, who has played 43 times for Rovers this season in all competitions – scoring three goals in the process.
Bath-born Kilgour has established himself as one of the first names on Garner's – and his predecessor Graham Coughlan’s – teamsheet, showcasing impressive versatility for a player still making his way in the game.
Centre-back is undoubtedly his preferred position, but he has played well across a back three and four this season.
Kilgour, whose contract expires in summer 2021, is sure to be as ambitious as any young player making their way in the game, but he has said many times this season he is living his boyhood dream of playing for Rovers. Many supporters have tipped him as a future captain. The interest in the player is just that at this stage and the uncertainty over the logistics of the summer transfer window amid the coronavirus outbreak will affect moves across the professional game.

I’m not surprised. He’s having a really good season, could definitely play in the premier league one day if he keeps working hard. I hope we have him secured on a good contract so we get some good money for him when he does leave.

I really hope he says here and actually plays 1st team football.... OK he might make the grade as a prem player but there's a danger that 2 years playing reserve team or sat on the bench won't do much for his development....

Agree, he spent so long and worked so hard to become a starter and it’s too early to risk jeopardising his progress. I hope he stays another two years before making his inevitable step up the football ladder, if we had a more ambitious ownership and clear, concrete plans to develop a stadium and training ground he may have been one to stay longer term. Unfortunately that is not looking very likely.

Sell for 50 million, Alfie is worth it.

Rovers have never managed to keep any player who wanted to leave once a higher league club has come a knocking, Alfie will be no exception and will be gone, for how much will depend on whether or not there is a bid war,

Locks stuck around for a while he was linked places every year. He was in the welsh setup for about a year whilst belonging to us.

Not a premier league player. Lacks pace and like Lockyer too many mistakes. Yes he’s young and bound to make mistakes but makes far too many and unlike Lockyer last season has got away with a few.
Lockyer was never championship level and he will soon be back to league 1 which is still above his level in my view.

Seems no-one was prepared to pay a fee. Only went to a club in a curious state.

It's what scouts and clubs do - look at all players who might be of any interest whatsoever and keep a dossier and database. For all anyone knows their report back might be "of no interest to us." Not knocking Alfie, just saying. Good of the BP to lighten the gloom though.

Not yet but he’s 21 mate and performing confidently at L1 level already, been one of our best defenders this season. For a centre back he doesn’t lack pace either IMO. People liked to criticise Lockyer and he’s now an international regular who Charlton fans have been singing his praises for his performances in the Championship. Players improve and adapt, they don’t always stay at their present ability.

With a year to go on his contract I guess a lot will depend upon Alfie and what he wants. If he wants a very good contract which pays 2 or 3 times what he’s on at the moment then Rovers will have to sell him to avoid a TL-situation. At the moment he wouldn’t get in a PL clubs first team, he would be way down the order at Bournemouth and the same at Southampton. He would be sent out on loan to another League 1 club at best. Much like Ryan Sweeney was when he went from AFC Wimbledon to Stoke. A very promising defender who had done well, went to a struggling PL team at the time and was sent out on loan. Now he’s in League 2 and not always first choice at Mansfield. It could take a few years to get even a chance at a PL club and then there’s no guarantee of success in the long term. It doesn’t always work out. Or he could think I’m 21 I want to be playing first team football for the next 2/3 years so I’ll stay here, be guaranteed first team football, as much as you can guarantee it. Then at 23/24 he will have to make a similar choice at the same age as TL did, go or stay. I don’t expect we will be looking at securing him at the moment with all this CV going on but if I was us I’d be looking at giving him a much improved contract now when he’s 20, 3 years and have an expectation that if we are still where we are (or worse) he will leave and we can either sell early or let him go on a “free” at age 23 so we still get some compensation. But then again this might be all bs because we are all looking for a story atm with no football to talk about.😉 UTG!

No brainer, if Rovers get a good bid, shake hands and say good-bye, Central defenders are like buses; far more tricky up-top, always difficult to replace a goal scoring number 9.

Unlike some i have no doubts at all that Alfie will make it at the very top of the game. At every level of his development he has been singled out for praise ability wise and most importantly for his attitude ,application, and desire to make it, indeed fans at his last loan club, Maidenhead i think, were convinced he was destined for the very top. What is really refreshing is that a local lad just wanted to play for 'his' team, in this case Rovers and is living his dream with us, i wish the lad all good fortune but am willing to bet that however high up the ladder he climbs ,nothing will compare to playing for his home town club and the memories he makes with us ,hopefully for another couple of years, will always mean the most to him. As for comparisons, imho and no disrespect to Tom Locks, Alfie is so much more of a footballer and there is no comparison, in a nut shell would Tom ever have scored that Blackpool goal? not in a million years! Good luck Alfie but stick around for a year or two eh! and hope Tom continues to impress at Charlton! UP THE ROVERS!
