A great keeper who I seem to remember got a lot of stick when he got his chance to play for England although I don’t remember it right now.

A great keeper who I seem to remember got a lot of stick when he got his chance to play for England although I don’t remember it right now. Deputising for an ill Gordon Banks in the 1970 World Cup quarter finals against West Germany, the Germans’ first goal went under his dive. presumably a fit Banks would have stopped it, but he did receive a lot of mostly unfair criticism.

Thank you. I was beginning to wonder if I had dreamt it up & Bobby Ewing was about to come out of the shower

Wasn't his fault Grabowski came on and ran Terry Cooper ragged.

Sad news a great goalkeeper and Chelsea legend. Unfairly criticized for the 1970 World Cup loss against a West German side who in truth ran England ragged in the second half. RIP the cat

Afraid i was one of those who thought he should have saved that shot v w Germany and never really forgave him, still he was a great keeper (most of the time!)2-0 up and coasting ,Ramsey was entitled to take Bobby off and save him for the semis, trouble is Germans were scared to death of Bobby and when he went off they relaxed ,cut loose and we all know the ending! closest i have come to breaking the record for throwing a tv! England only team to give the great Brazilian team a game in that tournament, and another player i never forgave was Geof Astle for missing a sitter against them! any way sure both will be remembered with affection from there fans and the football world at large, God bless .

Pretty much that. I never really blamed him but at the time was my most disappointed match ever. Keeper makes a mistake and it’s usually a goal. As hillyfields said Cooper had an awful second half when Charlton went off but that won’t get widely remembered and the team should have to carry the blame but istr that poor PB really copped it. But what a time that was and at 15 years old it remains my favourite and most memorable World Cup. RIP Peter Bonetti. UTG!

I remember way back in the early 1970s when Peter Bonetti was coming back from an injury, he played for Chelsea Reserves against the Rovers Reserves at Eastville. The crowd more or less doubled (trebled?) for that match just because he was playing. I went to that match with my Dad, can't remember the score but recall being a young lad being in awe at being so close to such a famous goalkeeper! One of the best and it is a shame he is mostly remembered for that 1970 World Cup match. RIP sir.

Peter played at Eastville in some mid 70s matches that some might remember? And late 70s too?
But that fateful 3-0 in 1980 which I saw, he wasn't there. The Tote roared that day. The Chelsea couldn't take it (we won, or the Tote end) and kicked it off in Muller Road end..
Can't say I saw PB.. But saw other England keepers like Nigel Martyn.

Tony Pulis scored a beauty? ?
