Tbh it kind of makes sense that we are able to outbid the likes of The Gills for players. In the past we've had to see numerous teams who get absolutely nowhere near the attendances we do and they have been able out punch us in the transfer market because we have likely been paying off so much over the years that we werent fully able to use all of our revenue towards the playing side. Now that we arent paying that debt off all the time i think it'll give us a real step up in the market for players, that and it is actually a pretty exciting proposition for players. The ethos at the club is changing at the moment and i think a lot of people will want to come along for the ride. Also the way the information released from the club through the bristol post about potential signings has interested me, All correct with Grant, Ehmer and Baldwin so far it strikes me that the relationships that rovers have atm seem to be getting more reliable and trust worthy. Its an interesting time for the Gas! Given we apparently pay up to the FFP/SCMP limit having debts shouldn't really come into to what we can pay next season, what will is getting DC's big earners off the age budget, Nichols & Sercs were probably on decent money if we paid decent transfer fees for them and Craig also decided our offer was good enough to warrant living away from his family for 2.5 years. Plus teams like Gills simply can't take the risk of offering players contracts at the moment.

So far the club haven't made a signing that would be on more wages that any of the departing players this season. Nichols, Clarke, Craig and Sercombe were all some of the clubs highest earners, so it should make sense that we have a bit of room in the wage budget to sign players on similar wages.
Wael and his family have never injected money into the club to help pay for a larger wage bill, that's just not their way of doing things.

I think it's like for like in that regard. But even on the same money these fellas seem a notch better than normal. And 3 things strike me. 1) Scouting network- arguably this the first window we've had the network fully up and running. Widdrington came into the club summer before DC and transfers are generally a little in the making than that. Reportedly GC liked his own signings and perhaps this is what happens. 2) Whether you're a fan or not (disclosure I think i am) BG appears to be likeable. Tony Craig was endearing on his way out. We've had lots of people buy into the vision. Whilst I'll be suprised if I like a manager more than DC and those years were soooo special. Imagine- you sign for DC, and then hear a week later that hes lambasting the board for not spending the coffers... its hard to sell the club under that guise. BG maybe naively- but hes clearly selling a vision of club that believes it can get promoted and he believes it. 3) Spending the budget a bit wiser. I listed on another post the players that are being replaced- didnt have the CV warranting a better contract. These fellas- so far do. I suspect, unless there are outgoings the our attack we built with loans and kids. But that's not the worst thing. The loan market is something we have consistently fluffed over the last few years. In fact theres a case to be made JML was the best weve had since Dawson in the conference?

Not sure FFP rules can be enforceable for either of the two seasons where matches are played with no fans or restricted attendances or where scheduled fixtures are not completed due to factors outside football. All clubs could suggest they budgeted for x amount of income (whether that is realistic or not) which was not available to them through extenuating circumstances and thus knocked their turnover into a Cocked hat. For instance, supposing we play 5 Home matches completely behind closed And 5 matches with restricted capacity. We could say that our significant investment in our playing squad was intended to make sure all of the first 10 home games had at least 10,0000 home fans in attendance. Doesn’t matter if that is pie in the sky wishful thinking and in reality we’d never have got more than 8k, our expected turnover figures are blown out of the water by us being obliged to comply with governmental guidelines on acceptable attendance of sporting events. Who’s going to fine us for breach of FFP if our actual turnover means we could only afford wages for 10 professionals and 8 youth teamers?
As for the moneybags tag, pretty sure every year we’ve looked at the more active clubs in the summer window and inferred that they are”pushing the boat out” this year without ever considering how much they’ve shaved off the wage bill in terms of released players. Hence we can hardly blame them if they jump to the same conclusions about us if we choose to conclude our free transfer negotiations early, especially when every team is having to consider how COVID19 will impact their ability to pay decent wages and is being cautious about offering new deals. However, the real moneybags tags will start to be applicable when transfer fees change hands eg. Blackpool shelling £200k out on Yates. If someone comes in with an acceptable bid for JCH (hope not) no doubt that will make us cash rich again and as we spend a fraction of his fee on a replacement that will constitute moneybags behaviour again!

Well considering Gills actually made the main news story on their website a few weeks ago that they were selling 2 pool tables from the players’ training zone for £1,000 each - I’d say they’re in real trouble.
It’s just deflection from their owner tbf for their own shortcomings. Didn’t see him complaining when Evans brought in how many last season?

Our financial footing means we should get top dollar for Alfie and JCH when the bidding starts, if Ake leaves Bournemouth I can see them renewing their interest in Alfie. Allegedly scouts from Bournemouth and Southampton were watching him.

I think most of us could see that it’s like you’ve said, finance-wise it’s not too different, like for like. Some big earners went out and the ones that have come in are still experienced but a step up perhaps so I think it’s more a statement of intent so far. Now that Nicholson, an attacking player, has signed that could/should make a big difference. I’m looking for that creative centre midfield player that we’ve not had for the past 3/4 years. Sign that player and a partner for JCH and we should be looking at a good season, hopefully. 😉 UTG!

Those fees alone would probably equate to a couple of 2 year contracts, so we’re saving money already!
