I like the formation but not sure who is going to tackle in that midfield! Or run! Thats interesting because I thought they were static V walsall and no one really tackles very hard |

I actually think this could be a coupon busting Sod’s law game where just when you can’t make case for a manager who can’t buy a win starting the season away to a team who should be in the promotion hunt the unthinkable happens and we win. I still think the mythical first 10 games are going to be a disaster with only or 2 wins but it wouldn’t surprise me if one of those wins comes on Saturday for no other reason than football likes springing a surprise when it looks like an absolute home banker. So 1-0 or 2-1 to Rovers.

Well it’s a new season in a league we are not happy to be in, but for the first time it looks like we have done good business over summer.. The problem is I don’t know what the team will be there is real competition for places with players in all area of the pitch having had a good pre season.
At the back we have lost one keeper, but In Burge we have a good substitute, not better but good enough, the back three are bigger and stronger than last year, I know he has come from City, but Bailey Wright will be a big asset , Willis will be along side him the question is who will be the third at the back, my guess is it will be the Kosovan international We have just signed ( I won’t even attempt to spell his name!), he looks big strong two footed with the ability to play out from the back. . With what looks like a much more stable back three the wing backs should have a lot more freedom to get forward.
In midfield it is difficult to know who will play other than Power who has just been named team captain, so you would expect him to start the question is who will play along side home in the middle it will be a choice from four, Dobson, who Parkinson seems to favour, Scowen, who scored one and had three assists in mid week, aLeadbitter who seems a different t player now he has sorted his off field health issue and then there is the young Dan Neil,
Up front , I think it will be Will Grigg with two from McGuire, Gooch and O’Brian.
That will leave Danny Gram and Wyke on the bench for extra fire power if needed.
All n all I think we are stronger and better organised than last season. But talk is is cheap before a ball has been kicked.

Are there a lot of older players you listed there ? We also think we have real competition for places, especially after adding a striker today. Our issue I reckon is whether we'll score enough to challenge but I'm excited about the 9 players we've signed. I'm going for 1 - 1 on Saturday. |

The young players who are forcing their way in include the Kosovon who we signed from Everton, Dan Neil who I mentioned, Diamond who will get lots of game time, Taylor and Embleton, providing he is not one of those player with talent but a fragile body which prevents them from developing.
I don’t think we have a team with wow factor, but for the first time since dropping down I think we have a team which can hold its own on the physical side of this league. The last two years it has been far to easy to bullyin us of the ball, especially at the back, which resulted in to many soft goals being conceded, we should not be the easy touch for big strikers we have been.
If we do go up there are very few of this team who will be here next year, they are not good enough for a mid table championship side.

Were you happy in the National League? I think the answer to that is no, and you would have wanted to be two leagues higher. That is all I have said, we are not happy to be at this level and we want to get back to a higher level. If we accept where we are settle for that, then that is where we will stay. So not like most football fans I will always want my club to play at the highest level they can. I will not belittle other clubs in any but I will stop being unhappy that a club with our history and fan base have been so badly run that we find ourselves in the third tier. |

When we were down in the Conf a lot of Conf fans told us it was important to accept where we were and go on from there, to not automatically consider that we were too big to be down there, we were there on merit and we were the same as everyone else. I guess it's a semantic issue more than anything whether you 'accept' where you are. Obviously you accept you are in the third tier on one level (coz otherwise you'll be looking for your league position in the wrong table) but don't accept it on another level (ie you want to be higher). I'm not sure what the precise advantage of an accepting attitude is. Ultimately it comes down to the team (only they can get you up), but I think there is a certain wisdom in accepting your plight in the sense that everyone gets behind the team from the position you are at, rather than being angry with the club for being where you are, or lambasting players for somehow not getting you promoted last year, etc. I feel like it took us a few matches to really get behind the team in the Conference, but otoh, we got behind them soon enough when they went on a winning streak. It's a bit of a chickan and egg which actually happened first, but I imagine it happens differently for every individual. But ultimately you can't have two thirds of your fans sitting there thinking 'I do not accept this, we should be in a different league' (not that SAFC support is ever in doubt). But at the end of the day, I feel like it is mostly semantic, and the 'if you accept it you will stay down' is as ludicrous an argument as 'if you don't accept it you will go up,' or 'if you're happy in the third tier you deserve to be there,' or any of the other magical-thinking nonsense arguments that a lot of football fans come up with. |

You're absolutely right, we "kind of" enjoyed the National League, but would have been mightily gutted if it had been more than 1 season. It's all relative, we have been a 3rd tier club for most of our history, whereas you lot have been 1st/2nd tier most of yours. It's natural you aren't happy to be at this level and feel you should be at least a division higher. |

I can picture it now,we kick off and everyone drops back into our own half as the ball is worked slowly back to Anssi.The whole Mackems team follow with the highest and fastest press you’ve ever seen.But wait,our lads turn tail and leg it forwards as Anssi unbelievably launches a first time long ball over everyone and we have 4 players clear on goal. Then I woke up but we probably f**ked it up anyway.

Not 100% sure but we we were going along mid table, then played Eastleigh away and drew 1-1 with 10 men with one of the best 2nd halves I have seen us put in and a glorious 30+ yarder from Ollie to bring us level again. After that game, we were superb; it was the game that turned our season? UTG |

Personally I expect us to lose - this is arguably (on paper) the hardest game of the entire season on match day 1! Sunderland - and away! So it's a big ask. I'd be over the moon with a point.
As such, my real hope is that we aren't smashed by 3 or 4 (or more goals) and that we give a really good account of ourselves - maybe losing by 1 and playing well or even losing by 2 if we play some really good stuff. I think that would give me some hope that against a more mediocre team we'd have a decent shot of coming away with the points.
Hate to sound so negative, but think Sunderland are a different level to us at present.
