So the result and outcome doesn't matter when it's a player on the field but it does when it's the manager? How does that work? Where did I say that ? Obviously it’s both. The manager builds his squad sends them out on to the pitch and then it’s down to the players. Well it's strongly implicit in what you've said, I'd even go so far as to say that's really the only reasonable interpretation of what you've said. TN scored 4 goals in three seasons as a striker but according to you it worked out well here. Then you talk about BG's biggest mistake being to get rid of Nichols. So you've made a judgement on the results we've seen from BG but then say when it's a player (Tom specifically) we just need to ignore the stats. If we're ignoring stats why aren't we ignoring them when it comes to Garner? I'm sure there's been some perfect examples from the FIFA coaching text book on the pitch since Ben started.

No what I said was that Garners biggest mistake last season was breaking the Nichols partnership with JCH and going to one up front. Also the stats show that whilst Nichols hardly scored , he was a constant in the side for a couple of years that finished mid table. Which is also what I said. I’m not blaming this or that I’m just giving my opinion on what I’ve seen. Garners made lots of mistakes and Tom didn’t score that many I’m not arguing with that.

I’d be interested to know what’s caused this change. The level? confidence? He didn’t score under DC, Coughlan or his manager at Cheltenham so maybe he needs a style of play built round him? That being said at Rovers it seemed to me he never was in the right positions, it said it all that with Nichols being a fox in the box type of player JCH got on the end of more tap ins than Nichols did so maybe he’s got a decent standard of coaching that we weren’t able to provide?
I have to defend him on the goals front. I was never much fo a fan of his for the money he cost and his inability to score. He’s like the player equivalent of Garner. But it can’t be denied that he was an ever present in Coughlan’s side that got to 4th and that side was based on grit and hard work so couldn’t afford any passengers. In that sense he was a success but does that justify 3 seasons of hardly any goals and a sizeable transfer fee? All in all a poor transfer for us but his final half a season under Coughlan saves it from being the worst ever in my view (which it was looking like being at one point).

You’ve got to laugh really. 2 goals in league2 and he’s now some kind of world beater.Lets see how many he gets in half a season,I reckon 4 by that time if he’s lucky.

Don't you mean hope he only gets 4 goals, as none of us really have a clue how many he'll get at L2 level. He's never really struggled to score in L2, it's L1 where he's had problems. I see he's just posted he's in one of the L2 teams of the week, meanwhile we've Leahy as our main goal threat!

TN in the team of the week for L2?
Just out of interest, how many teams of the week did he make in L1 during 3 years at Rovers? I think I know the answer ....

I don’t care if he scores 20 by then,he’s proven to be a dud in league 1 with us.Good luck to him but his best earning days are in the past due to his failures when he was here.

I think he'll be doing ok wage-wise at Crawley. They have a fair bit of money for a supposedly tin-pot club. Tony Craig wouldn't have gone there for peanuts.

Do you think his one league goal per season is the one that might keep us up? I was thinking all the chances he created would be more than Westbrooke, Upson, Grant, McCormick and Barrett combined. That’s how desperate the situation is I genuinely don't recall Tom Nichols creating all that much! Can't fault his effort but he was hopeless for much of his time with us. Don't understand this myth that's built up since he left whereby he was some brilliant deep lying technician who created chance after chance to counter his frankly embarrassing goal return for us! By the end everyone who sat near me didn't give him criticism, they actually just felt sorry for him whenever he came on... P.s. Agree that upson, Westbrooke and grant create F all for us, albeit two of those are defensive midfielders. However Mccormick has done well for us recently - before he got dropped (!) - and Barrett hasn't given enough of a chance yet to show what he's all about!

A decent player but lacking in decisiveness due to confidence.
We can see he’s a decent player but no end product.
Sad fact is we lost one Tom Nichols, now we have an entire squad of Tom Nichols

Isn't it time to move on and worry about how many our own strikers will score?
