Parcel deliveries to the EU

If you send or receive parcels from friends or family living in an EU country, such as France, Spain, Germany or Italy, there are some changes you need to be aware of.

The biggest changes are around customs documents and fees. Currently, you don’t have to supply a customs declaration or pay customs fees when you send a parcel from the UK to the EU, however, from January 1st 2021 this is likely to change.

On arrival to its destination, your parcel will be cleared through customs which means you will need to provide a customs declaration form that clearly states the contents and value, along with an 8 digit HS Code (also known as a commodity code or tariff code).

Although VAT will no longer be charged on goods exported to the EU, your parcel will incur customs fees which the recipient will need to pay before it can be released. The cost of these fees will vary depending on the country you’re sending to and the value of your item.

When travelling abroad to EU countries I no longer have to manage the anxiety associated with putting my passport in the scanner correctly as not to hold up the queue behind me. Instead, I get to be correctly scrutinised by burly customs and immigration officers.

I see this as an absolute win.

UK architects do not now have an automatic recognition of their qualifications in EU member states following the country’s exit from the union

As a result of Brexit, architects from the UK will have to demonstrate compliance on a state-by-state basis before calling themselves and operating as architects. The only exception is in the Republic of Ireland, where a mutual recognition agreement has already been reached.

Some claim that being out of the EU made no difference to our licensing and using anti-Covid vaccines. I think we all know the real story though, don’t we?

As a result, France hasn’t even managed to vaccinate 500 people as of this morning, whereas we (GB) have managed into the 100,000’s. There’s also reports that the EUhas vastly under-ordered vaccine, and has followed extremely hampering rules whereby they have to reserve a proportion of their ordering for a vaccine which is still several months away from being ready.

Oh, how I wish we were still in the EU. I would also have loved our country to be on the hook for several billion quid towards the EU Covid recovery fund. Just imagine, we might even have got about 10% of that given back to us.
