I remember having conflicting emotions at the time, on the one hand excited that it seemed we had some financial security and that any doubt about stadium funding had disappeared, i had little faith in the then board and it seemed we would be put on a more 'professional' footing. On the other hand i had seen what this kind of 'ownership' had done to other clubs and was a little concerned that we would lose our identity, and sell our sole to the devil! There was a lot of media hype and worrying expectation( generated by the fans i might add, not by Wael) and some were upset when it became clear that the new regime were not going to have an open cheque book to chase the rainbow. I like every one else was devastated when UWE collapsed but soon realised it was the right decision for the club and the project did not benefit the club enough to justify the investment. I did not like 'The Dwayne Sports' structure and was delighted , if i understand rightly' that Wael now has full control. My concerns have evaporated as I think we now have an owner who is a Gas ed like the rest of us, and is not just here to play with a new toy, I think Wael is a fantastic owner and long may he continue to work towards what all Rovers Fans long for, but please hurry up Wael as I'm knocking on a bit and i want that season ticket in the new stadium ! Up the Rovers! Not meaning to be a grammar snob but it’s DWANE. On another note have you seen AJIB figures ? Makes you wonder how Wael can finance us, does me in anycase. Cheers. If we want to read gasheads.org conspiracy theories we can go on gasheads.org to pick them up there. Had a peek the other day. It's like therapy session over there. Paranoid delusions doesn't even begin to cover it.

I thought we’d be spanking the likes of Man City away in the prem by now. You’ve let me down Wael 😥

It has flown by. I really like Wael, think he's a good bloke and you can tell he cares unlike a lot of owners out there. The training ground and the money he has put in are very much appreciated and he's done well on that front. I don't think we have improved on the pitch since he took over though. The promotion had nothing to do with him, despite him being carried down Gloucester Rd, like some messiah! He's only had full reigns for a short time though, and he's proved how ruthless he can be by getting rid of managers, he's seen how that seems to work at Chelsea, and is following suit here! I think the next few years will prove whether Wael really has been a success, can we now appoint the right manager? Can we get to The Championship? And of course can we get a new Stadium? Inadvertently wael being carried down the road (deserved or not) may have cemented the club into his DNA. Fully bonding with fans during good times can "carry you" through the hard times.

Aside from the Sainsbury's and lawyers situation, the club were losing around £400,000 a year.
Now with a more professional set up and a non playing workforce of more than double the Higgs era, we are seeing losses pre covid in the millions.
The inheritance won't last forever. I sincerely hope that the DNA project comes good in the next two seasons, as there will be no one left to save us if Wael walks away.
Posters should remember this and praise him at every opportunity.

It's one of those moments where you remember exactly where you were when you heard the news, I was standing in a car park near Brighton station! I was blocking up a doorway on Greville road in Southville.

I would argue that he added to the feel good factor plus we introduced post training meals and DC promised everyone a contract extension and the Vegas trip afterwards iirc. We shouldn't dismiss the small things just because we didn't notice big changes. We went up automatically with the last kick of the season. Fine margins.

5 years in; mostly debt free, new training ground and still in league 1. Undoubtedly Wael has done everything we could have asked for to date other than build a stadium.
I don't think most of us fans will truly appreciate what he has done for the club until we are sat in a modern all seated stadium. To be honest even with the new training ground i dont think the club will advance much in the football pyramid. If a new stadium can be achieved in next 5 years then he deserves to be carried down Glos Rd again.
But as another poster has rightly said Wael wealth is not of billionaire status, he has recently cone into inheritance and who are we to expect him to spend that on us. One day he might walk and say he has done all he can and decided he need and want to keep his wealth for future generations of his family.

I was blocking up a doorway on Greville road in Southville. I was landing in Florida on business. I turned my phone on and it went ballistic with messages, got shouted at by a dragon in US customs who didn't understand who or what the mighty gas were and told me she would send back on the next plane unless I turned it off !!!
Thanks Wael, these 5 years have flown by, or is that just misery and old age. p.s. lend me £10.00...............................

I wonder if he wants a business partner to help build a stadium when I win £175m on the Euromillions tonight?

I went from eureka to evolution not revolution, I would liken it to a used condom, it had its moment and then deflation. 😆

Higgs was desperate to get his cash back and sell to who ever he could. He looked like he had death on his shoulders and was close to being financially ruined! Yes at the time we all thought we won the lottery but in truth we were never going to be the next Man City when it comes to finances. Yes things are happening off the field (training ground) but we are not moving forward on the field and wonder how long we can go with a owner who has no clue how to manage key footballing decisions. We will never know if there were better options when Higgs sold out but I don't think that ever truly mattered to him as he was desperate to recoup his money that he lost over the years.

I suppose I am cynical about Rovers having supported them for so long . However: I can recall ringing a mate on this forum saying " I finally agree within 5 years we will be in the championship and playing at UWE . My expectations and vision was very high. Fast forward 5 years and the truth be known we have made no progress on the field and nothing at the MEM.
Although: we will never ever know how long Higgs and co would of survived . Is it possible we could be like Hereford or chesterfield Wrexham or Notts county ??. My expectations are more realistic and if we can stay in division one . I am grateful for Wael as it is probable we could of gone bankrupt playing in National division South . Who knows ??

For all we bemoan the success of clubs like Accrington and Fleetwood, and at a lower level Forest Green and Salford, we shouldn't forget that some long established and decent size clubs had to make way for these newcomers. Nobody has a right to league football, as we well knew but some have perhaps forgotten. So treading water in L1 might not be great at the moment, but it could be so.much worse. And I don't see that as settling for mediocrity. We should be ambitious, but it has to be from a starting point of financial stability.

It's one of those moments where you remember exactly where you were when you heard the news, I was standing in a car park near Brighton station! I don’t think I would have been too far away from you- in an office in Tower Point in fact. My naturally sceptical/cynical nature meant I didn’t get carried away with the tales of billions in wealth so it wasn’t a total surprise when things largely remained as they were bar greater spending on ancillary posts around the first team. 5 years on I’m possibly a bit under-whelmed how we have spent the best part of 18 million in that time to stand still, having not even mounted a promotion charge at the back end of a season. I agree with the poster above that Wael has maybe not surrounded himself with the right people to maximise the money he spent in that time. The building of the training ground is the one day of light that one day we could yet kick on and become something more than an average to relegation threatened league one club. Just round the corner and in clear view of my office! You should have said!
