Alfie Biggs, The Baron of Eastville
The Bristol Rovers History Group are pleased to announce that their first publication will be a biography of Bristol Rovers legend Alfie Biggs.
In two successful spells, between 1953 and 1968, Bristol born Alfie scored over 200 goals for Rovers.
In between those spells with his hometown club, Alfie enjoyed a successful time with Preston North End. After leaving Rovers for the second time, he also played for Walsall and Swansea Town prior to retiring from league football.
The biography will tell the full story of Alfie’s illustrious career and his colourful life story and has the full backing of the Biggs family.
Memories from former team mates will be included and one of them, goalkeeper Howard Radford, has written the foreword to this long overdue book charting Alfie’s career.
The authors, Mike Jay and Ian Haddrell, have researched and collected not only details of his professional career but fascinating details of his time playing representative football for the Army when he played with, amongst others, Manchester United’s rising young star Duncan Edwards.
The book also looks at his interesting, not to mention colourful, life both before and after his time in the beautiful game.
Many supporters have sent in their memories of watching Alfie play at Eastville, or meeting him at the Eastville Greyhound track, and playing darts or snooker against him. If anyone has memories of Alfie not yet shared, please contact the authors as soon as possible.
While Mike and Ian have undertaken the bulk of the writing, Keith Brookman has undertaken some additional research.
Supporters have an opportunity to become an advance subscriber of this publication at a cost of £20 plus p & p. For that they will receive the book with their name printed inside in advance of it being sold on general release.
It is anticipated that the book will be published this summer 2021 and subscriber orders are now being taken.
Anyone interested can pay by PayPal eastvillegas@live.co.uk using friends and family option, please, or by bank transfer or cheque. Please contact Mike Jay on eastvillegas@live.co.uk or via our Bristol Rovers Legends Facebook group for further details.
We look forward to hearing from you and hope you are all staying safe and well. As soon as it is possible in the 2021/22 season, we will arrange a book signing at the Mem when we will be mounting an exhibition of photographs and memorabilia of Alfie’s fantastic career.
Look forward from hearing from you.
