Ex Rovers player Ian Hamilton has passed away ~ he was a resident at the same nursing home my mum is in.
Ian played for the Gas between 1956 and 1968 making 149 appearances and scoring 60 goals.

If my memory serves me correct Ian was a part time professional for his first four or five years before becoming a fulltime Pro in the 60's. Was troubled with a knee injury before he left us, think that eventually ended his career. RIP Ian.

It got me thinking how very lucky I have been to have watched Bert Tann’s side in the 1960’s and bearing no comparison to the dross I have seen for the past decade or so. Different era of course and the “no buy no sell policy” ensured continuity and above all total loyalty from the players and fans alike. Truly. a fantastic era.
True Blue older Gasheads / Tote Enders know what I’m saying and Ian was part it alongside Alfie Biggs etc etc.

I started mid-60s and have had so many great memories, Cup runs, evening matches at Eastville, successful promotion to Division 2, other exciting, though ultimately unsuccessful promotion battles, usually a consistent top half Division 3 team. Some great moments this century, Wembley 2007 and the seasons 2014-16 but all at a lower level. But it is what it is and I’d settle for some success at our current lower level. It was a different time with different attitudes and different standards and expectations. Then we could compete, now it seems very much harder. UTG!

Good old fashioned 'inside forward', think he scored 4 in a , let me see, think it was a 7-0 v Shrews, but may be wrong! One different kind of memory of Ian is the fact i believe he was the first player i saw to wear gloves on a cold night at Eastville! , at the time i thought it odd and a bit 'soft', little did i know he was ahead of his time in the fashion stakes! Thanks for the memories Ian, R.I.P., Heck of a side Rovers are assembling up there!

Attachment DeletedOne of my favourite all time players.Very naturally gifted inside forward.Played for the reserves in the football Combination and wasn't found wanting when he made the first team.Supremely skillful and on a par with the Latvian.RIP Ian and thanks for playing such beautiful football. NB.Wrote to the then Iconic Charles Buchan's football monthly extolling his virtues and saying he should play for England.I nominated my team especially to give Ian a mention but picked 8 forwards. No wonder I failed miserably as manager of Stafford under 8's!!

It's difficult for me to contribute any more to the generous comments above. Ian was a close family member and very dear to my heart.
He played as an inside forward (usually left) in the revered Biggs, Jarman attacking line up. The position of inside forward has disappeared somewhat in the modern game and I suppose the equivalent today would be attacking midfielder or "number 10".
Looking at his stats, he scored 60 goals in 149 games. A return of one goal per 2.5 games. All scored in tier 2 or 3 football. In the modern game a player with that strike ratio would be worth a fortune. It has to be also said that Biggs and Jarman would be pretty valuable assets today also! Rovers were lucky to have such good players at the same time.
Ian's career was cut short by a knee injury and he effectively retired early. Today, such injuries are fairly commonplace and players usually return to action.
Once again, on behalf of the family, many thanks for the kind words.

RIP and condolences to family and friends. Great player who have gone on to score many more goals were it not for that knee injury in 64/65. That season he scored 21 goals from 33 appearances before injury cut his season short.
