English Heritage, UWE, and a chat with Darrell.
I am led to believe that relevant minister is going to be at the Mem tomorrow, so a final clearance could be received very shortly thereafter.
Went to the Mem this morning to get the S/C membership to be able to attend the meeting on the 17th.
Bumped into DC who was walking across from the Blackthorn. Spoke briefly with him, and he confirmed he had spoken to many players with regard to joining us. He didn't name anyone, but what was interesting was his philosophy.
At the interview, if the prospective player asked about salary, basically he was shown the door. If they asked about the club infrastructure, and training facilities, then he knew he had a potential signing. Anyone here for the money need not apply basically.
I asked him if the potential of the new stadium was used to draw prospective players in, and he said of course. The UWE was a big factor in selling the club to new recruits. So I guess that confirms the UWE will be going ahead.
He knows that we have to get off to a good start, but is still gutted at getting relegated. He said that feeling will only go when he regains our status, and that is his one and only target.
Gave his insight into why Luton took 5 years to go back up. He said to begin with they only recruited experienced league players to gain success. He however is convinced the answer is to recruit conference players in the main, who are young and keen and looking for a long term future in the game. There are plenty of decent ones about and it's his job to get our share of the better ones. However, he reiterated forcefully that all contracts must be incentive based, saying that when we achieve then the players will really see rewards.
He has a number of players to whom he has made offers, and we are up against other conference clubs and in some instances league 2 clubs. But he remains confident.
One amazing insight he did give was that, as he understands it Eastleigh signed Constable on £2000 per week and a signing on fee of £30,000. I just said I'm sure he can sign better than that for less than that. He smiled and agreed.
Gotta say, he is really keen to impress, so let's give him time and hopefully results will follow fairly quickly.
