I have been back in the Uk for 2 months, having been, comfortably, stuck in Australia for 2 years because of COVID. I'm a carer, so it is more difficult to get to games now. However, I was at both the last matches and would like to add my thoughts to all the words written.
The problem we have is obvious to me - we are a very easy team to play against. Walsall let us play and, in patches, we looked good. In contrast, Garner had us totally sorted from the start. Swindon played a high press throughout, so our midfield, which had looked quite good against Walsall, was always under pressure and constantly lost the ball. In contrast, we didn't press at all, so they always had an easy outball.
Against a high press, you have to have forwards who can run the channels, as well as pressing. They need to be fit and have some pace. You perhaps can afford a slower player with and eye for goal, but not without others who can do his running.
I also think, as I've said before, that it is a mistake to play wing-backs at our level. For me this only works if they are very good players. If, as one person said when i made this point before, you are worried about the ball over the top, then you need your full backs to b aware and cover behind the centre-halves.
Which brings me to Barton. I was against his appointment for non-football reasons, but it is increasingly clear that he has little idea of what he is doing. After the first half on Saturday, it was very clear that we needed to change our game. We were 1-0 up, but had been under the cosh all through the half. He needed to take off Pitman, move Brown forward and bring on young legs up front to press and chase the outballs. Instead, he was totally out-thought by Garner. Swindon, with little money, showed what is possible and I think we will find the make the play-offs and Garner becomes a success. I'm not saying here we should have kept him, his record here was very poor, but Saturday showed that he can put together a team, which plays for one another and attractively.
Onwards and upwards and everyone keep safe.

The trouble is Canberra all of your above points have been obvious to most Gashead’s since 45 minutes into the season at Mansfield. They have only disapated slightly when we have got results and semi decent performances playing that way against very very poor teams in Oldham and walsall. Any team we have played with half about them have dominated our 3 / 5 at the back and joey just won’t change it. We have options to play a 4 now Luca hoole is back and in particular with a lack of fit centre halves for tomorrow but don’t be surprised if joey sticks to the back 5.

I'm sure you are right, but the main point is in your last phrase. Either Barton can see and is too stubborn to change, or he can't see (probably unlikely). Either way he is clearly not the man for the job!

Either way he is clearly not the man for the job! That’s my main issue with him. He is stubborn. He won’t change even though we can all see it’s clearly not working and he’s also recruited extremely poorly and one dimensionally throwing all his eggs into one basket / formation. Other than that it’s all good 😅

JB has said that we need to transition from a losing culture to a winning culture via being hard to beat. I sincerely believe that he thinks that five at the back will achieve this aim, and logically speaking it should, however the reality is that individual performances are quite literally letting the side down.
I suspect that he is reluctant to go to a back four as they probably haven’t worked on that formation as much in training (or it has looked bloody awful) so, in his view, it might be even more of a gamble than sticking with the current system being drilled into the team.
From memory, GC basically stuck to one system (and the same team) and that consistency benefited the players as they knew exactly what they had to do, although that does make you predictable and opposing teams work out how to nullify you as the season progresses.
So why isn’t it working? I think that he puts too many experienced heads on at the start where youth would be better at pressing and getting up and down the pitch. You then bring on experience to either protect a lead (wishful thinking) or to take advantage of a worn out defence when speed and mobility are less of an issue.

I don't disagree that it is better to keep a settled team and formation, but not if it isn't working. You need to be flexible. As an example, you say you bring on experience to protect a lead, which is often spot-on, but on Saturday we had a lead and the way to protect it was to bring on younger fitter people to press. Personally, I think Barton is stubborn and has a massively over-inflated idea of his managerial talents.

Either way he is clearly not the man for the job! You are right either too stubborn or he can't see the obvious. Either way, it makes him a poor manager, which is exactly half the reason why I didn't want him in the first place and why I keep calling for his head. His record is there to see. The other half is due to his off field issues and that I just dislike him. However, I hoped he'd stay out of trouble and prove me wrong as manager. But he had failed to do both.
