SAJID JAVID VISITS THE MEMSecretary of State for Culture, Media and Sport meets with Nick Higgs The Secretary of State for Culture, Media and Sport visited the Memorial Stadium this afternoon, as part of a tour of Bristol. Sajid Javid met with Charlotte Leslie and Nick Higgs to discuss the plans for the new UWE Stadium and associated developments. The Minster expressed a great deal of interest and support for the project and the £200 million of investment it will bring to the local area. The Chairman spoke with him at length about the cost to the club and its partners of the delays from the JR and English Heritage appeals and the knock on effect this has had on timescales. Nick outlined to him that although the club still aim to start building this year, it is now unlikely the stadium will be ready for the start of the 2015/16 season. Everyone at the club would like to thank Mr Javid and Charlotte Leslie for their support on this issue. We hope to bring you more news on the stadium project in the next few weeks. How very apt that the day we are visited by politicians we play the much loved political chestnut of hiding the bad news amongst the good news of the signing of Jamie White. So we are now only 'aiming' to be on site with the UWE build this year when it was strongly implied, but not said of course, that a problem was being sorted and the go ahead was nigh.my personal take is that towards Christmas time,if we are not top or near the top of the table,an announcements along the lines of we cannot go ahead with the new stadium because of the financial implications due to being in the conference. A realistic view at the moment would probably be to agree with that but the big question that needs answering is how long are Sainsburys contractually ( or otherwise) going to wait.

Bloody hell MC Chisel. If god parted the Red Sea, you'd say NH was at fault for drowning the poor Egyptians.
NH has never stated a start date as far as I know. He just said the summer. That runs until the end of August doesn't it?
How long you been a Gashead? I've waited most of my life and we are closer now than ever. WHEN it is built, I will be eternally grateful to NH even if we have to wait another few months.
Mind you if you are looking for consolation go on OTIB. They are always a better source of info.

Far too cynical MCC. Chill out my friend you're beginning to sound like a politician. Our Mr Higgs is not as dumb as many make him out to be. It makes sense to play the maximum damage card to today's audience.

I like the Red Sea analogy.NH hasn't given a start date but weren't the diggers ready to go in after the trash jr?No mention of pre-commencement planning to sort out back then.we now 'aim' to start before the end of the year so the summer now ends anytime before 2015 then.Been gas for 43 years and will be as grateful as you to NH IF it happens.Cant bare to see the gloating on Otib but they always know what's going on over here despite having no interest in us. GHB I haven't been cynical in the past but from my personal point of view the 2 differing time scales implied within a day of each other has been a very devious attempt to pull the wool over the eyes of gasheads, but I do take your point of buttering up the length of the delays for the benefit of our visitor yesterday.Cynicism is human nature I suppose when different problems are said to be cropping up without warning but I should think more than just myself are feeling more doubtful as the delays lengthen.

Fair play MCC.i only meant you probably haven't been waiting as long as me. You obviously have.Pre-commencement is always a pre requisite of a build like this. He probably didn't mention it before because we have not been this close before. I think it's about 6 to 8 weeks.
But remember, the starting gun doesn't get fired till Sainsburys pay up. They won't do that till they are sure all appeals are exhausted. At this moment the Carstairs bull hasn't run it's course, although the Sec of State has made it obvious that will go nowhere with his comments.
Until then we are all in limbo, including NH. But it's easier sometimes just to slag off the guy who has got us nearer to what has been my greatest wish for over 40 years. Most anger will disappear once the diggers move in. Until then just ignore the tossers on OTIB.
I will even forgive him our relegation when it happens. You can build a team anytime. We will not get another chance to build a stadium that will secure our future again in my lifetime.

Am tired of people saying 'forget the stadium and concentrate on the team.' We will continue to struggle in the lower reaches while we play in such a decrepit shithole. I imagine many players have chosen smaller clubs over us because of our facilities. Even AFC Flyde will have a better ground than the Mem soon.

You can build a team anytime. We will not get another chance to build a stadium that will secure our future again in my lifetime. Well said. I've never understood the thinking of those who believe we should forget the stadium plans now we're out of the league so that we can concentrate on the team. If we don't build the UWE I can't see another opportunity coming up any time soon and I believe it's integral to our future progress.

The new stadium does not guarantee success but it gives us a very good chance. Without it, it will be slow death. Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk

We are being spun the same line about UWE as we did on our return to Bristol. The Mem has been allowed to get into it's current state for a reason. There are many worse grounds but with better teams. None if it makes any sense.

KP Twerton was an experience that we all enjoyed, and yes we were successful..remember Gerry calling it a cowshed.. Think the team of the 90s brought us together because it was successful. The team of 2015 can do the same. Here's hoping Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk

Now that's gone and until we get out of the Mem we will go nowhere. The main difference being Denis Dunford getting us to live within our means and scouting non league and even park teams. We lost all of that with the current lot believing throwing money at the team equated to guaranteed success. I was at Twerton last week and I had such a good night telling Sophie about the way teams came and were scared to play. I wish we had that spirit now.

KP
I too loved Twerton but in a way we never moved on from that era of rag bag rovers. Whilst other clubs stayed with the times commercially and facilities wise (training, scouting, youth etc) and professionalised we remained a club run by a small number of men on a part time and amateur basis.
I really don't feel Geoff and Nick were able to keep with the times. Part of this was financial restraints but also failing to keep up to date with the evolving nature of football.
Its not too late for them but they have to let go of the controls a little and let someone in who can revolutionise the commercial department. From sponsorship to better merchandise and stadium experiences to better non league scouting and links with other clubs. I also feel it was a lost opportunity not building a training facility at Uwe even if initially quite basic with room to improve as money dictates.
In my opinion we spend too much on wages. Our wage budget was over £2m when most clubs in league 2 spend £1m. Some of that could be used to pay for a chief executive and director of football and put some aside for improving match day experiences and scouting etc. better merchandise, match day experiences and sponsorship as well as advertising will increase revenue and pay for better staffing and players long term.
So relegation must be a time to re prioritise our budgets, press the reset button and try new things. Its the 21st century lets run the club that way.

22000 follow rovers on twitter, we should utilise every one of them. You could have a Brfc Twitter fans sponsorship club !!!! Have a save the youth team text donation number now we are losing funding!!
Have a pledge app where you pledge money to the club if they secure a particular result (like stripe had on the of for the forum sponsors club). We should do all sorts of social media nonsense as we are in that era not the chicken inna basket cabaret erA

The Mem has been allowed to get into it's current state for a reason. There are many worse grounds but with better teams. None if it makes any sense. Twerton was great but it was a different era and there were many other tatty grounds about, we were on a par or bigger than clubs we can no longer hold a candle too. The thought of being dwarfed by Colchester, Chesterfield and Rotherham mystifies me. But that's the truth of the matter, they have new functional stadia which makes them better prospects than us when attracting players. No one can guarantee success with the UWE Bristol Stadium, but continued failure can be guaranteed without it. Regards Rich utg
