We seem to concede more penalties than I’ve ever remembered as a rovers team and got me thinking if Belshaw has managed to save any in the last two seasons. Wonder if anyone would have any stats?

Looks like he faced 4 last season and 5 already this season. Not saved any yet for us (in the league at least)

He saved one near the end of his time at Harrogate (April 2021) and the stats are that 85% of pens are converted so it’s not that damning really that he hasn’t saved one yet for us. |

Much like a shootout, when it comes to pens the keepers really can’t lose. If they save it, fantastic, if not then hey ho. but either way you have to look to how you’ve conceded it in the first place. Finley was silly having a pull back on the shirt yesterday, the lad still had tons to do to find the back of the net. |

Sure, I'm not getting on his back at all, someone asked for the stats so I looked them up. It's probably more of a concern that we've had 5 awarded against already this season, but again, some of those were debatable. JB has easily won us more points than he's lost us since being here |

Peter Shilton saved just 3 penalties in his career. If there had been a sub left in 1990 I would have used Dave Beasant for the shootout.

Belshaw could copy Shilton’s tactic of diving after the ball has already hit the back of the net. That might get those who criticise him never guessing the right way to dive off his back!

As a former keeper albeit at a more junior level I always found that if you stayed still and waited for the direction the ball was going in you had an opportunity to save if the strike was mishit or straight at you. To be honest if the strike was well directed and hit hard you never stood a chance anyway whichever way you decided to dive. I do still have a picture of me facing a penalty kick diving the correct way but not saving at Trashton during a junior cup final - Alan Dicks presented the medals after so you can tell how long ago that was!

Still likely most are scored, but not all luck at all I seem to remember that Brian Parkin was good at saving penalties. Always felt reasonably confident in a penalty shoot out if he was between the sticks. |
