Thought it would be worth having a general thread covering all parties for this year.
We'll have a GE within 24 months, local elections this May will be a litmus test for Sunak and Starmer.
Sunak has two years to convince the public and rebuild trust in the Conservatives. He made a keynote speech today with 5 policy areas:
"First, we will halve inflation this year to ease the cost of living and give people financial security.
"Second, we will grow the economy, creating better-paid jobs and opportunity right across the country.
"Third, we will make sure our national debt is falling so that we can secure the future of public services.
"Fourth, NHS waiting lists will fall and people will get the care they need more quickly.
"Fifth, we will pass new laws to stop small boats, making sure that if you come to this country illegally, you are detained and swiftly removed.
"So, five promises - we will: Halve inflation, grow the economy, reduce debt, cut waiting lists, and stop the boats.
"Those are the people's priorities. They are your government's priorities. And we will either have achieved them or not.
"No tricks… no ambiguity… we're either delivering for you or we're not.
"We will rebuild trust in politics through action, or not at all. So, I ask you to judge us on the effort we put in and the results we achieve."

5 Promises promises 🙄
1 , everyone expects inflation to drop but it’ll still be too high 2, They will claim a 0.1% rise in the last quarter is proof that he’s kept his promise 🙄 3, They more than doubled the national debt so a salami slice off that means nothing. 4. Wishy Washy nonsense where they’ll gerrymander the figures 5. They’ll pass more/ new laws but the boats will still come 6. Maths innit

The first four are surely what everyone of rational mind wants to see, and largely what is already predicted to happen.
The boats comment jarred with me though as it's a sop to the right, who are probably feeling a bit fragile at the moment.

Starmer's turn shortly: "Speaking in Stratford, East London, he will say: "That's why showing how we can change the country is so important this year. We can give people a sense of possibility again, show light at the end of the tunnel." But he will warn voters - and his own party - not to expect big increases in public spending. "Of course, investment is required - I can see the damage the Tories have done to our public services as plainly as anyone," he will say. "But we won't be able to spend our way out of their mess - it's not as easy as that. There is no substitute for a robust private sector, creating wealth in every community." He also promised to set out new policies in the coming weeks that will form the heart of Labour's next manifesto. Labour has already promised large-scale constitutional change, including abolishing the House of Lords. Sir Keir will argue the changes will create "a fairer, greener, more dynamic country"." www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-politics-64166870

Channel 4 u turn confirmed, Starmer out today saying that he'll repeal any strike legislation enacted. Also channelling his inner Brexiteer with: " "It's not unreasonable for us to recognise the desire for communities to stand on their own feet. It's what 'take back control' meant," he said. "So we will embrace the 'take back control' message but we'll turn it from a slogan to a solution. From a catchphrase into change." Poor souls, having to need a second job to make ends meet. I think we should increase their salaries but ban then from second incomes including 5 years after leaving office. The former should be linked to average earnings and the latter to prevent favouritism during office and then taking directorships as a reward for losing the election. "Since the end of 2019, millions of pounds of outside earnings have been made by a small group of largely Tory MPs. The Owen Paterson scandal last year prompted some rule changes, but questions have been raised about whether they go far enough." news.sky.com/story/westminster-accounts-mps-earn-17-1m-on-top-of-their-salaries-since-the-last-election-with-tories-taking-15-4m-12758768

Looks like it's kicking off in Brazil a la Capitol riots.
In the meantime Turkey are still holding out on Swedish Nato membership.

Lord Sugar would fire the lot of them for not focusing (focussing?) on their jobs. Tories are inevitably the worst culprits. Surprise surprise.

Remember the Trans-Pacific Partnership? "Rishi Sunak, the UK prime minister, and his Japanese counterpart, Fumio Kishida, will on Wednesday sign a defence agreement, enabling the UK and Japan to deploy forces in each other’s countries. The move comes as the UK government seeks to strengthen its engagement in the Asia-Pacific region to counter the influence of China, although the war in Ukraine has forced London to reassess its global strategy. The talks in London will also see the two leaders discuss Britain’s bid to join the Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership, a free trade bloc that includes Japan, Canada, Mexico and Chile, in spite of reservations from some Conservative MPs." www.ft.com/content/55742e74-c9f5-4617-bfe7-49beb1ecec70
