Right then , we’ve had an ok season when we analyse things following promotion after this season ends .It’s quite a big step up from div 2 to div 1 , lots of bigger clubs in this league with bigger budgets and a few wily clubs …. Wycombe , Fleetwood etc at this level also. Pretty sure we’re going to stay up barring a calamitous ending .
We’re going to be 20 ish points off a playoff place and 30 ish off the automatics .
How do we plug that gap , which players need to stay and which go if we seriously want to mount a promotion push ? For me …. New goal keeper , new left back , a new centre back, two new midfielders and a striker . Thats on top of what already here .
I’d ship out Belshaw, Gordon , Whelan , Coutts, Connolly, Marquis , McCormick, Anderson. None of these are top 7 club players imo.
plus we’re likely to lose our loan signings.

New pitch and some pacy tricky wingers would be nice. We seem to have all our players packed centrally and we fail to stretch the other teams to create space.
We are missing the bite, energy, tenacity Rossiter brought I think. If we can't be sure he will be able to contribute enough we need a suitable replacement or at least good cover.
Not against having a bigger striker up front but we must improve on Loft and Marquis. Both have had small decent spells but are not up to standard if we are aiming higher. Marquis more useful than Loft, imo, but definitely need to get a better focal point to build attacks off of when required.

Two big strong full backs and a big strong center half please,we are far too lightweight at the back for this division.

Improve to achieve what? Matchday experience. League position. Off field reputation. Attendance.
I'd like a better matchday experience and a strong showing in league 1.
This would be enabled by having modern toilets and catering. Also a better mentality in the squad when taking to the field. At present we are too easily rattled and dominated.

Maybe.. but judging on his comments after the wycombe defeat i think he realizes now this is lg1,you need to be more tougher & street wise all round.

Hate saying it but I think we need a massive overhaul IF we genuinely want to compete next season.
One maybe two new keepers LB / 2xCBs Gibson as Captain if he joins permanently as is being voiced in some areas. Three / four midfielders Two new strikers
My reckoning was 12 players minimum needed in .. Five loanees will join I’m sure … that would mean seven permanents..
Sadly we have too many players on long term contracts so we are stuck with them - Evans/ McCormick / Connolly are the first that spring to mind. None are good enough at L1 top half level.
Add to that list Loft definitely …. Anderson maybe …. Belshaw maybe ….
Throw in the loanees leaving …
If it is Barton at the helm and sadly I think it will be then I’m sure he will tell us just how many aren’t staying or at least he doesn’t want. Let’s see how many can be moved on though.

I would imagine Whelan and Coutts could be off at the end of the season at least as players anyway. As for the others, maybe reasonable squad players? I would certainly look for a quality spine, so new GK, central defender, midfielder (possibly two - ball winner and playmaker) and striker on a permanent, add to that a left back. For me, 3 loanees maximum in addition to the above. There was talk of play offs at Christmas time, what's going wrong?

I’d agree with all the shipping out apart from Marquis, especially with Coburn off come the end of the season. Whealan to carry on coaching etc but the playing days are gone. I have been giving Gordon a big chance but his inability to but a tackle in is beyond a joke now, time and time again he lets his man beat him without even challenging.

Gordon is a waste of space. He can't tackle, he keeps getting caught out of position and can't kick with his right foot.

Left back. Gordon is no where near a div 1 player

Gordon is a waste of space. He can't tackle, he keeps getting caught out of position and can't kick with his right foot. I think he has the potential but at the moment he isnt good enough. There was one point in the first half the ball went towards the corner, he looks favourite to get it against their guy and then gave up and let him have it. Obviously felt more confident trying to defend him with the ball than winning it and trying to play it to safety like he should have done. Once again we have lots of possession but in the wrong areas of the pitch and at one point it went back to Belly (for the 103rd time) and then put it out for a throw deep in our half. Other clubs are showing us week in week out that you can have 30-40 possession and win comfortably. I don't think Portsmouth were particularly great but they did attack us down the wings and caused panic getting crosses in. We stop and go backwards without even trying to take on their full backs. Its just so frustrating to watch.

Hopefully you’re wrong again and Gordon will also be chasing promotion to the premier league and be picking up international caps in a few years !!!

Marquis was surplus to requirements at Pompey, they’re still not a top 7 side . He’s only going to regress imo. Works hard but you need a bit more than that.

To be fair you could say half the players in our league who haven't come through the youth system of that club were surplus to requirement by someone else. I just don’t think we will find another another guy with a goal record like him for nothing.

Couldn't pass a ball to one of his own players if his life depended on it. Welly the ball diagonally across the pitch being his signature pass. Only attribute was his great recovery skills after being caught out of position countless times.
