Surprise, surprise, after another season of amazing experiences it has brought up the exhilaration celebration of the humble football fan, who knows what to do best.... celebrate with their heroes and like minded on the field of play.
The EFL have outlawed this, rightly so in a duty of care after some previous nasty scenes.
I've seen women, children and even disabled on the pitch celebrating this season with their clubs, are they all subject to banning orders, or worse?
But, within context can there be some nuance here?
Simon Jordan of talkSport interesting comments:
(with reference to Sheff Wed v Peterborough match)
"What would you do?” Jordan said on talkSPORT. “32,000 fans, euphoric, built to a fever pitch by the nature of the game - 5,000 fans coming on the pitch, how are you going to stop that? Football encouraged it for years and years, and thought it was something to be celebrated, but now it has changed its mind.
While I’m in the camp of people should be following the rules, I just don’t see how you stop it. I watched the game, and you could’ve brought in the militia and they wouldn’t have stopped them getting on the pitch.
The tragedy is when you see an assistant referee getting a whack in the face like in the video we’ve seen - in terms of them getting knocked or whacked over… We need to find a way to enforce the rules, or make sure if they do come on the pitch then they behave the best way they can.”
Can there be a break in current rules, where perhaps the 4th 5th or 6th official can add to referee report and adjudge no ill intent?
As long as safety is adhered to, and the invasion is good willed, can there be some way of accepting this just as part of the game in which some choose to celebrate in extreme circumstances a particular way temporarily? (Especially dressed as knights)
