Wasn’t confident we’d get this one done so really pleased he’s sticking around.
Good start getting the two Grants signed up. Now time to shore us up by possibly bringing back some of the ex loans and bringing in the newbies.

Probably our best player this season from when he signed , our form from then onwards wasnt the best and with JB dicking around with formations and tactics that didn’t suit the squad as if it was pre- season as well as chopping and changing the keeper obviously didn’t help and if we hadn’t had Ward in midfield from January onwards I think we might have been looking at a relegation scrap. Probably the only thing Barton got right from Christmas onwards was signing this very good player so I’m very pleased with this.

I love early signings, the player knows where he’s gonna be, can settle and hit Pre-season running. Good stuff all round 👍🏾

Good stuff all round 👍🏾 The publicity machine is hardly pushing this signing - probably because there is no one around to give interviews. You can get away with it when the fans know the player but any new signings deserve more of a fanfare and that is probably why we will have to wait a little longer for news

Do you think that is our central midfield sorted? Cant see more coming in unless anyone leaves Now, wingers and centre backs please! I guess that might depend on how confident the medical team are with Rossiter? If we play a 4-2-3-1 (which I think best suits us) you would have Ward with Finley covering the ‘number 8’ position, Evans and hopefully a rejuvenated McCormick competing for the ‘number 10’ shirt but only Rossiter at the moment in holding ‘number 6’ position. I suppose Josh Grant could fill in there if required but I think he’ll be competing with Gordon for the left back position. I really want to see us getting the centre backs sorted asap - Gibson and Taylor will do 😁

Do you think that is our central midfield sorted? I hope not. A) I don’t think six is enough numbers for CM. B) Josh Grant, Rossiter & Ward all have big fitness question marks (more the first two), McCormick had a stinker last year and Evans & Finley were both 6/10 at best for most of the season. Still would like another two additions in that position, personally.

I could see one potential player with promise coming in just to cover the Coutts & Whelan gaps, maybe along the lines of the Wolves lad Taylor Perry, etc. my main hope would be Rossiter, Ward, and Grant staying fit so they can all be used along with Finley alongside McCormick, Evans, etc. If Josh Grant stays fit it gives great flexibility at the back and midfield so fingers crossed the operation was successful for longer term!

Rumours abound of Sercombe returning. I’d be well up for that so long as he still has it.

Top signing that. Wardy should be made Captain too, I reckon. He leads by example, unlike Finley on occasions.

I guess with Coutts, Whelan and Bogarde gone we still need at least one more CM/DCM even if Rossiter (and Grant) stay fit. Would love Bogarde back for this season

One very good season becoming a firm fans favourite, then followed it up with two very crap ones. Also didn’t look much cop at all in both games against us last season.

If top 10/PO push really is the aim this season, I’m struggling to see how a 33-year-old Sercombe is the type of signing who’s gonna help take us there. One goal and three assists in 41 appearances for Cheltenham last season for a midfielder who I’d assume we’d be bringing in to challenge Evans for the attacking midfielder role? Got experience sure, but so do Finley, Ward and Rossiter in that area of our squad. If his wages are cheap and he’s one of two CMs we bring in then maybe I could get on board with it. But honestly, meh.

Whelan,Coutts and Bogarde all played a similar role and are no longer in the squad. One would assume 1 maybe 2 signings who play that role would be imcoming. 1 loan ,1 experienced player of a good pedigree over the years.

He scored one goal in front of the thatchers in a win and didn't even raise a hand in celebration

Secombe's 33 years old now, I'd be surprised if JB was still interested in signing him, as he's 18 months older than when he tried to sign when we were a L2 side. Plus where do Sercombe, Ward, Finley, Rossiter, Evans and McCormick all fit into the squad let alone the side.

Me neither. The fanfare with Sercs is a strange one. One very good season becoming a firm fans favourite, then followed it up with two very crap ones. Also didn’t look much cop at all in both games against us last season. It’s a common thing. Like insisting any player who was good on the pitch is an immediate choice for manager (Mansell?). What makes a manager is totally different to what makes a player. Tons of players have commanding and inspirational qualities on the pitch but it’s totally different when your job is getting other people to give these kinds of displays. Entirely different skill set. Often decent managers were pretty nothing players. Same with ex players, or, players that had a good game against us (Oztumer was one i fell for, he was superb against us but so many other variables). Sercombe wasn’t even considered the future when he was here and at 33, it would be an underwhelming signing. Familiarity is a powerful thing. I want players who played for the promoted teams last year who are surplus, very good prem youngsters and/or players who did it at the right end of league 1 last year. If sercombe is the answer then we will be nothing more than a league 1 mid table side at best. I don’t even think Finley and Evans are the answer unless they dramatically improve. They’ve had a year to impose themselves in league 1 and neither has. Of course, we don’t know what their fitness is - there’s a chance they are both carrying minor injuries, who knows, one or both might have other problems, or it could be simply we didn’t have a defence or strikers to take the pressure off which is why players like ward, who can tackle, were so essential. Perhaps with a good defence and attack both Finley and Evans will suddenly look good when they have the space and time to play their game.
