Hopefully the Open Day will be more like the old Fun Days with various things of interest for family members and fans, rather than the commercial "Queue for a new shirt Day" where you can also go to the bar, or buy an ice cream from a van, while the prawn sandwich brigade get wined and dined out of sight of the ordinary fans.
It would be good if the Gas Girls could be represented with the Cup they won and the Community Trust were on hold to show what they do, Geoff 20man to compare/ interview players/backroom staff on the tannoy (while also advertising his golf tours?), Crossed Swords to have a stall? (Believe the club get a share of profits?)
In yesteryear, there were lots of inexpensive things going on; kids dress like a pirate competition saw lots of happy smiling faces and I can remember army vehicles, police cars (kids love switching on a siren!), fairground rides, remember Ron Craig was there for about 30 minutes paying for kids going on the magic teacups - little things but made some kids day all for a tenner, while the Dad's haggled him for transfer info (days before the internet you just asked a director), penalty shoot outs with the youth team keeper, tombolas, fashion shows featuring the players and models, massive sales of the previous seasons stock, tours of the stadium, support groups met and greet, have a chat with Swifty the EP reporter with a chance to be interviewed in a pre season EP review etc etc.
Presumably this year Johnny Keyes will organise some live music and the fanzone would be open, but it would be good if the players (past legends as well?) could walk around and take the time to have pictures and sign autographs from fans.
Apart from queueing and a pretty dull training session, I can't recall anything of note from the open day for years. It's good to meet up with familiar faces that you haven't seen for a few months but surely the club can do something to try and make it a bit attractive.
Something for students to encourage them to come along, offers for kids?
A good fun day could also make quite a lot of money other just shirt sales and help to build a rapport with players.
