Good afternoon/evening/morning Gasheads (wherever you are in the world).
After an aborted attempt to get going on the forum last year, I've finally managed to make it here and try to create my first thread. This was bought on by a discussion with my son about who would win in a match between the Spanish world cup winning team of 2010 (his choice) or the Brazil world cup winning team of 1970 (my choice). Which got me to thinking...
If all the rovers teams that had ever won anything (league title, promotion, Watney Cup etc...) had to play each other, who would be the best of the best?
1952-53 division 3 south title winning team / 1972-73 Watney Cup winning team / 1989-90 division 3 Championship winning team / 2006-2007 promotion winning team / 2014-15 promotion winning team / 2021-2022 promotion winning team (apologies if any dates are incorrect).
Obviously, there are a lot of differences between the era's they played in so we'll have to have a level playing field and say that all the teams would be at todays levels of fitness / diet etc... .
So, over to you Gasheads...
Who do you think would be the Best of the Best?
Adrian.

Hmm Lambert at his super fit best with Elliott, Walker, Igoe, Campbell and Disley at the top of their game might possibly shade it because they really gelled as a team at the back end of that season. However, if the playing field was levelled the other way with all those teams having to use 1950s kit including clodhopping boots, laced up heavy footballs and playing on heavy mud or sand pit pitches none of them would get within 20 points of those 1953 champions. Let’s not forget that with minor tinkering that team twice achieved our highest ever placing in the football league.

The 1990 squad were not the best individually, but were so organised and played to their strengths.
Plus Joner, Jockey and Ollie would not ever give up, but if someone got through there was Steve Yates or Martyn to save us ( or the aforementioned would just hack them down!. I am not sure many defences could handle Big Dev and maybe apart from Stewy in the last 50 years have we had such a deadly finisher as Penny? (Gary not Shaun!) I would say Curo had the best instinct though.
If the match was allowed the rules in place in their time ie 1990- back passes and no professional fouls, then they would stand a good chance.
Just thinking, how under rated was Reecey? I think he joined Rovers on a one year deal and took a chance by taking a pay cut from working in a tyre factory to live his dream.
Fair play, he played at the grounds of European Cup winners when he was a kid, Anfield, Villa Park and the City Ground, plus he won at Fellows Park and Molyneux (the teams that released him as a youth).

The Megson and Francis teams were promoted from L1 so in theory would beat the 50's and more recent sides playing in lower divisions.
I can't see you can split those two though as one went on a club record undefeated run and had Smash and Grab scoring goals for fun and the other ended the season as Champions and had £1m man Nigel Martin in goal plus others who went on to play in the Premiership/First Division.
Easier for the country as that's got to be Brazil.

Rovers Southern League champions 1904/05 were fantastic Tottenham Southampton Queens Park Rangers plus other future football league sides. Billy Beats and Andrew Smith top goalscorers with the superb Arthur Cartlidge in goal. Rovers also won in 1935 Beating Watford in final plated at Millwall the Division 3 South Cup what is now the Associate members Cup aja Leyland Daf. JPT or most recently Papa Johns Trophy. That was clubs first Cup final victory.

I would have to say the 1990s side would be my choice. They may not have been the most gifted, but they were a good unit, were well organised and never gave up. They also convincingly beat a very good BCFC in the championship decider. All of that against a backdrop of being exiled from our home city playing at a non league ground and training outside of a chocolate factory. I also think that season was the defining time in this clubs modern history.

The 50's were an exceptional side, div 3 south being equivalent to league 1 of today, they went on to challenge strongly at top of tier 2, just missing out on promotion to the top tier ( wonder how different our future would have been had we made it!)the Megson and Francis sides were very similar , not the best individually all though both had some very useful players, but as a unit they were both excellent, oh and 1970 Brazil , no contest!
