For probably the first time in my life I've been too busy to take any notice of preseason and just wondered how are young un's are looking.
By young un's I mean both the likes of Ward, Jones, Greenslade and Lawrence who have pro contracts already, but the younger intake of Will Lavin and Kofi Shaw etc. Very early to say but can the experts see any of these lads 'making it' or are they destined to end up at Yate and Mangotsfield?
Obviously interested in opinions from people who watched development games etc last season, not just preseason

Obviously interested in opinions from people who watched development games etc last season, not just preseason I think Jones and Ward have come on strongly and are decent fringe 1st team players… personally I think a loan to National League or League 2 would benefit them as to continue their development they need to continue playing regularly… Greenslade looks ok but not quite as far advanced as Ward and Jones… it’s been interesting to see him play Right Wingback as well as up front so he definitely has versatility… Lawrence and Larvin and Shaw are where Jones and Ward were a couple of seasons back so whilst looking ok with potential they need to keep training with the first team and again loans at NL south or around that level would probably be best for their development in my opinion

Does anyone know if Max Edwards-Stryjewski, Malik Sesay or Jarmail Langlais are still at the club? Know they've made fleeting appearances in EFL Trophy games and the like over the years but haven't seen them mentioned in any preseason squads.

Thought I saw somewhere that none of the 2nd year youngsters got offered pro deals for this season. Can't remember where though so not 100% on that.

Know it is down to their academy but our friends over the south side are far more advanced than us as far as youngsters go,they seem to have a never ending stream of them coming through. Ours seem to just disappear into non league.

Ours seem to just disappear into non league. Unfortunately you are not wrong. You are not wrong but the infrastructure proves how vital it is to have an Under 23's! Their players are kept on for 2 /3 seasons coming in and out of first team training and playing a regular Games Programme against the likes of Millwall, QPR, Cardiff, Reading, Charlton and Watford. Tommy Conaway is a great example of being Nurtured through this system, also being loaned out to Yate 2 years ago, Bath City at 19 and at 20 years old comes on early in the season for The Other Bristol Team and plays 33 games and 12 goals at Championship Level. When you look at the Loans a few of our boys (JONES and GREENSLADE) have had, they have been in the same leagues (Conference south) with Similar success but its now upto the JB to help them make that transition into the team. Its Difficult with so much at stake. I also believe the red side are being forced into making some of these boys names to get some money in for them to balance the books and looks like that will come true very soon! We could do the same but its needs the right amount of beleif and media attention to make it happen i think from that side of things we are very much behind as a club.

Was that the idea when Garner came in - develop youth etc etc etc. Was the right plan but execution was not. Not sure we have a plan now.

Think it all hinges on getting the training ground 'phase 2' completed. So we can house the academy/reintroduce an u23 team in the same place as the first team and play games there. Or at least I think that was mentioned previously?

Theo Lyndon loaned back to Melksham, but Harry Coker (defender?) returned to the Gas Anyone got any insight on these two?

Ryan Jones is doing well at Bromley. They are second in the league behind Chesterfield with a good chance of promotion to league two. He’ll come back a better player.

I do wonder if we will recall in Jan. LWB option we dont really have. Would love to see him get a chance If we are shifting to a back 3/5 it would make sense to bring him back (if that is an option under the terms of his loan). If we were sticking with a back 4 then it would be better to let him carry on his development with Bromley and compete in the pressure cooker of a promotion race.

I hope he does well but hasn't he had a broken hand/wrist and another injury which meant he has only featured in about 6 or 7 league games, with only a couple of starts?

Yes, done well but only played a handful of games. Best for him (and us) would be for him to lay regularly for Bromley and hopefully earn a new contract with us and get into the first team squad next season.
