Mangan in the post match interview again refers to us learning a new way to play. From his comments, i am inferring it is sit back, play deep and hit opponents on the counter? Anyone who has been to the first games confirm or seen other new "style"? Think that this along with dangerous passes around our box could quickly turn the crowd at home! Risky. Crowd will need to be very patient, which the home crowd is definitely not! Lucky Barton gets to miss the initial trials of this method Defensively sounds like Wilson and Crama are our best performers and most comfortable on the ball so far so against i'd go... Cox Hoole Wilson Crama Grant Finley Ward Thomas Brown Collins Marquis

Yep I think that’s pretty much the style we’re going to play…or try to play.Hit other teams on the break with incisive passes. I think the natives will need as much coaching as the players ! “Stop poncing around and whack it up front” 😂

Not sure Grant will be starting yet, expect his game time is being managed.

That style of play is ok away from home and at home to sides who want to play on the front foot.
At home to sides who sit back we'll have to be more proactive otherwise there will be lots of nil nil stalemates!

Nothing new about this approach. Could "Stoke" Whelan be getting a bigger say?

What was wrong with the old style, the one which led to the increased attendances at the Mem?
Looking at last night's highlights it looks like the new style almost cost us two goals.

It also got us up to 10th(?) before we lost our way in December when we lost Rossiter/Thomas and JB fell out with Belshaw leading to Quensah and Balmore replacing them. If even Sinclair is getting caught in possession what hope is there for the other players. I can't recall Plymouth messing about at the back when we played them last season.

It’s fine if you can deal with crosses. Portsmouth knew this and so did Ipswich. 3 goals from crosses already

My nerves can t take the new style, we are going to concede a few howlers, I don t think the players available are good enough for this style.

It is admirable to want to play in the style being trialled BUT goodness it is risky! Swansea played and passed their way up the leagues and are trying to do so again and they got caught v Birmingham trying to pass their way out of danger, IMHO you need to have a balanced approach and it is not always wise to try and pass your way out of the danger areas, sometimes you need to hit it long , teams will soon learn and put pressure on the man in possession forcing him to play a risky pass . The new style relies on the whole team keep finding space to receive the ball and at our level it is going to be hard to make it work, good luck JB and staff ,reckon you gonna need it.!

They work on the basis that if you cross 20 time you get 1 goal Our team I find we would cross all day and not score a single goal. That was pompeys only tactic. Cross enough times.

Just hope we don't get to mid-season before realizing the new style of play is not working!

The clubs that win promotion from league 1 mix it up passing wise they have some big defenders and they are masters of the dark arts.
Pretty much every season I’ve watched the Gas in league 1 / division 3 this is what has been what works to win promotion..
In that time I’ve also seen several sides try and play out with short passes from defence and they mostly struggled or been relegated, Swindon and Mk dons in recent times spring to mind.
