Surprised at the attendances as I assumed crowds generally were higher in the 50's, how did the owners manage to lose the stadium when crowds were so high!
PS I think this thread deserves a better title!

PS I think this thread deserves a better title! I'm surprised at attendances in the First division as well given the post war boom in football. I guess this reflects ground capacity at the time. In a pivotal moment in Rovers' history, Eastville was sold in 1939 - against the wishes of a number of directors. Unfortunately, it may have been inevitable with no income likely for the forseeable future. Although Rovers played at Eastville for 90 years, we only owned the stadium for 18 years (1921-1939), leasing the ground for the rest of the period. Rovers have owned the Mem for longer.

Crowd sizes would vary dramatically week on week. When you look at a teams seasons games they can swing from 32000 to 6000. City and rovers always boosted their averages by the derby game crowds. They were the cup finals of our seasons usually.

Actually ,on the subject of attendances ,11v11 shows Newcastle ( yes the mighty toon) had a whopping 17,500 home crowd v the gas in April 1991 ,( couldn't be arsed to send an attachment)
We ran out winners 2-0 , now I know they had a crap season ,but where were the mighty toon fans then? Or did they not want to see us do them over....

Yep I was there. We played Sunderland and silenced their Roker Roar when we went 1-0 up in 1992.....around 12,000 for that one!?

Was that Ossies first game as manager for them. They still had an uncovered bit of terrace at one end of the ground i seem to recall. Away fans sat high up in the stand at that end being frozen by the wind.

And the lowest home att was 10,000 v Oxford ,and this in a then 30,000 + St James. Seems the media have made a myth of the wonderful Toon support ( cant remember boycotts ) ,or mabey they were just waiting for King Kev and the glory years....

Brilliant days...

Respectfully suggest the average home crowds over 21 or 23 games are the average, regardless of swings in actual attendances on match day, and cannot be put down to one derby day match a season, besides which City were in division three that season? I think it puts to bed the people, some even gasheads, who say “how would we fill a 20,000 stadium?” 4th best in division two is very respectable considering the teams below us It also, sadly, shows how much our paths have diverged from those teams, many of which have new stadiums to capitalise on successes on the field.

Problem is I doubt many of those fans from the 50's are still around to pack out any new ground?
