Imagine we didn't appoint Martin Dobson in 1991. We only won 1 of Dobsons 12 league games in charge, losing 8 of them. When he was sacked and Denis Rofe took over we were one of the best sides in the Division from November until May it was proper promotion form. We finished 13th, 12 points off the 6th place. Just 4 more wins and we would of made the Play Offs. We could of played in the inaugural season of The Premier League. The other one my Dad references was the Malcolm Allison season (my first proper season). We won 4 on the bounce I think including the 4-0 demolition of City. Then I think we had about 5 games postponed due to ice and snow. He thinks if we didn’t have that interruption the bandwagon would have carried on. Surprised that we did go down as that was a really good team. That was a strange one. After our finish to the 91/92 season you would of thought we would of had momentum for the 92/93 season. It was the same set of players plus we signed Andy Tilson for our record fee(Which still stands), Paul Hardyman, Justin Channing and Gary Waddock who had all played in the top flight. We were absolutely terrible though, Brian Parkin couldn't grasp the new Back Pass rule that came in that season and defensively we were a shambles. As you said we had a brief resurgence when Malcolm Allison came in, won 4 on the spin, but we crumbled again. Malcolm Allison only lasted a couple of months, before being replaced by John Ward. Who'd of thought back then that we would never get back to that level again 30 years later?

I remember the first game of John Ward and my dad saying “This is kick and rush, just up the channels this isn’t modern football” (in 1994 or whenever it was!) Was quite a fairly accurate description of the JW style. Very much balls up the channels)

Direct and played the channels, 2 old school wingers in Lee Archer and Worrel Sterling, it got the best out of Gareth Taylor though.

Lee Archer was my favourite player and an underrated rovers player in history. He was absolutely mustard but injury did him in.

Scored some great goals, including our 1st at The Mem.

The song was much better when Gladys Knight sang it. Gladys Knight also did a version of “Heard it through the grapevine” which was orders of magnitude better than the well known Marvin Gaye version. Gladys is the greatest female singer of all time. Smokey Robinson also sang a version of Grapevine, it sounded very similar to Marvin's, which I agree was inferior to Gladys's attempt.

I was a dance DJ in the clubs and bars about 15 years ago, and I had my own special tamla and ska set for situations where I felt they could handle some real music. Nothing quite beats that Gladys version on a large system. Also this ole heart of mine, and nowhere to run by Martha and the Vandelas. Sprinkled in a fair bit of Desmond dekker and 60s ska. I had no interest in the two tone UK stuff whatsoever but the Calypso derived stuff I really liked. Some great music out of that era. It’s a shame that MOBO evolved from amazing dance pieces to blokes who seem like they have an IQ of 25 mumbling “money money money women women women” through a vocoder over what are basically Phil Collins cadences with a Casio keyboard beat. 90s were another classic era but I really do mourn what’s happened to r and b and hip hop. I can’t begin to describe how monumentally sh** the current “robots singing celine dion” genre upsets me 🤣 A lot of modern music - Billie Eilish, and the whole gambit of these vocoder balads sound like Prozac and benzodiazepines in musical form. I do wonder if the overpresciption of these influences it and kids are so spaced out on psychotropic medications they like simple, happy tunes to stare into the wall at. Rant over. Things were always better in mah day 🤣

Whereas The Temptations,Four Tops, Stevie Wonder etc etc will still echo around. I feel honoured to have grown up listening to that music. So much talent.

We also had punk in the late 70s and 80s, the prodigy, oasis, some amazing dance music at the turn of the century As I say, now we have either boring balad singers like Adele, billie eilish and that’s ginger bloke, all absolute dirge of garbage, or vocoder based robots singing depressing songs over sub 303 beat. I always thought the mid 80s were a backwater for music and the last 10 years have been awful too. At least we had metal then.

I agree , about '84 or '85 music became MTV based , and it fell off a cliff somewhat . Of course Stock Aitken and Dennis Waterman didn't help did thay?
Philly soul was another decent period , MFSB Gamble and Huff....
